East Asian Colonization History: Marxist Scholars Inside Japan’s Imperial Machine Mantetsu

This episode explores the profound paradox of the Research Department of the South Manchurian Railway Company (Mantetsu), a premier colonial think tank that became an unexpected sanctuary for radical left-wing intellectuals during the pre-war era. We trace this narrative through the life and postwar reflections of Itō Takeo, a prominent graduate of Tokyo Imperial University's radical student movement, the Shinjinkai (New Man Society). Driven out of mainland Japan by a severe post-WWI economic slump and aggressive state crackdowns on "dangerous thoughts," Itō and a generation of elite Marxist-trained intellectuals fled to Manchuria. There, Mantetsu offered them high corporate salaries, massive budgets, and a shield from the metropolitan police in exchange for their raw analytical brainpower.
