It begins in the Old. We don’t learn of Jesus first in Matthew but in Genesis. Over countless generations, God had been preparing His people for the arrival of His Son telling us what He would be like and what He would do. Even the greatest miracle in the history of the world – the resurrection of Jesus Christ – is illustrated and explained in the Old Testament. Join us this Easter for an unforgettable message about the Third Day God!SERIES: JESUS ON EVERY PAGEJesus is the central figure of the Bible – not just the gospels and not just the New Testament. From cover to cover, old and new alike, we are being told the story of Jesus. This is especially true when it comes to the gospel message of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. We see shadows of that truth in countless Old Testament stories. In these days leading up to Easter, we want to see Jesus in ways we never have before – we want to see Jesus on every page.DISCUSSION QUESTIONSWhat did you learn from this message that you didn’t know or understand prior to hearing it? In what personal ways were you challenged? Encouraged? Corrected?Just like the Israelites began treating the Ark of the Covenant like a good luck charm, religion has a way of reducing what is personal and relational down to something impersonal and ritualistic. They depended less on God and more on the presence of the Ark for power to defeat their enemies. In what ways do we still do this?Jesus is represented in so many Old Testament stories. In this series, we only explored three; the first promise in regards to the first sin, Joseph as a type of Christ, and the 3-day pattern that prepared us for Christ’s resurrection. With each story, we learned something else about who Christ is and what He would do. Are you aware of other Old Testament stories, types, or patterns that God used to prepare us for His Son’s arrival or what He would do? If so, share it with the group, both what the example is and what we learn from it.God is humble. Humility is all about having an accurate appraisal of oneself, which makes God supremely humble. Since He is humble, He has no need to prove Himself and no need to always appear as if He’s winning. God is willing to take a loss. Especially when the humiliation of that loss accomplishes so much for those He loves. The perfect example is the cross. God was taken captive, beaten and nailed to a cross, suffered derision from onlookers, and surrendered His blood and life. It looked like the enemy had won. But he had not. As believers, we have to ask ourselves from time to time, are we willing to follow His example? Can we suffer a loss if that’s what God asks of us? Can we trust that He knows best – that He knows the outcome?Share with the group what Christ’s death and resurrection mean to you personally. When did you come to know Him? What has your journey been like? Where is He challenging you and growing you today?
