Easter Island

Moai (both singular and plural) are stone statues on Easter Island. Most were carved from a single piece of stone, and around one-tenth have separate headdresses (pukao). There are more than 1,000 known moai distributed across the island. At Rano Raraku, where most of the moai were carved from the rock, nearly 400 more or less completed statues remain. The quarry appears to have been abandoned in haste, as several unfinished statues are still embedded in the rock. Virtually all erected moai were later toppled by the native islanders, most likely as a result of inter-clan conflicts. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
