Awareness and early intervention are critical. Everyone knows someone with an eating disorder. Eating disorder do not discriminate, they affect individuals of every age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, and socioeconomic background. In the U.S. approximately 30 million people will have an eating disorder in their lifetime. At least one third are men. There is one death as a result of an eating disorder every 52 minutes. People who suffer with eating disorders feel immense shame. Eating disorders are underreported. Many people with eating disorders are not diagnosed and fly under the radar, and these cases are not reflected in the statistics.
