Ed Chaffin on Servant Leadership, Executive Coaching, AI, and Building High-Performance Teams
from The Storehouse Media Podcast · host Sherrie Clark
n this episode of the Storehouse Media Group Podcast, simulcast with The Neil Haley Show, Neil “The Media Giant” Haley sits down with entrepreneur, leadership consultant, executive coach, and author Ed Chaffin for a wide-ranging conversation about servant leadership, executive development, organizational culture, and the rapidly changing role of artificial intelligence in business. Ed brings decades of real-world executive experience to the discussion. Before becoming an international leadership consultant and executive coach, he served as an executive with a publicly traded company and ran its largest division—approximately 1,200 employees and $150 million in revenue. That division was built through seven acquisitions, while the larger company completed 12 acquisitions as it grew from approximately $5 million to $300 million in revenue before being sold for $1.4 billion in 2007. Ed explains an important distinction about his background: the company that sold for $1.4 billion was not personally his company. He was one of its executives and was heavily involved in the company's growth, acquisitions, and eventual sale process. After retiring from that corporate role, Ed received roughly 150 messages from people he had worked with. He printed the messages and began reviewing them, believing they contained a clue about what he should do next. What he discovered surprised him. Ed had assumed he had directly coached or mentored perhaps 10 or 12 people during his 14 years with the company. But as he read the messages, he realized that 80 or 90 people had described the impact he had made on their careers and lives. That realization helped shape his next chapter. He pursued executive coaching certifications, including work through the International Coach Federation, and reinvented himself in 2008 as an international leadership consultant and executive coach. His message for leaders is simple but powerful: You are always leading, whether you realize it or not. Employees are watching how leaders communicate, react, prioritize, and behave—and those actions often have a larger impact than leaders ever realize. Ed describes his leadership philosophy as servant leadership. Leadership, in his view, should not be about protecting one's position or treating talented people as potential threats. It should be about helping others become stronger leaders and better human beings. The question becomes: How do I lift this person up? How can a leader help the people they serve grow professionally, personally, and as leaders themselves? Ed says he considers coaching executives and leadership teams part of his purpose and something he believes God put him on the planet to do. That sense of purpose also keeps him humble about the influence a coach can have over an executive or organization.
