Property's been the golden-goose egg in New Zealand for as long as we've known. It was your retirement plan, your income stream, your lifeline, and what you worked towards. The plan was simple: buy a house, pay it off and/or rent it out, and by the time you stopped working you had something solid behind you. It was our version of the American Dream. But with the house market in a state of volatility or decline, interest rates and insurance going up, and capital gains tax becoming a hot-topic, is planning your life around the property ladder outdated? or is it a financial trap?
