Unable to exorcise it due to the crowd, she decides to contain it in a playful way. Focusing her street magic, honed from a difficult childhood, she wills the stone face to warp into a ridiculous, cartoonish smile. The spirit reacts, and its green glow flows out, forming a giant, grinning balloon that delights the children. Later, on the castle ramparts, Catriona feels the temporary side effect of her magic – a green stain on her hand – and realizes there might be more to her abilities than she thought. The festival continues, and Catriona senses that more interesting events are on the horizon. This tale features tropes like a Fish Out of Water as Catriona's street-smart magic clashes with an ancient threat, and Urban Fantasy as Edinburgh's festival becomes a magical battleground.Then, we travel to feudal Japan for "The Samurai Sorcerer". Hiroshi, a stoic samurai, lives by the code of honor and the skill of his katana, viewing magic as mere folktales. His world is shattered when his clan is slaughtered by shadow creatures summoned by a warlord seeking forbidden power. Amidst the ruins, Hiroshi discovers an ancient scroll pulsing with power. Upon touching it, he is filled with a desire for vengeance and imbued with shadow magic. Known as the Shadow Samurai, Hiroshi uses this forbidden sorcery, though it sickens him, to track the warlord. He confronts the warlord in his fortress, finding him drawing power from an unspeakable source. Though tempted by the scroll's power for a final, devastating strike, Hiroshi chooses to fight with his sword, guided by his warrior's code, against the warlord's monstrous transformation. He defeats the creature, but at a cost. Ultimately, Hiroshi chooses exile, burying the powerful scroll, recognizing the darkness within himself.
