Former vice president and editor at large of Philomel Books, Patricia Lee Gauch is now a fulltime writer and lecturer. She has authored more than 40 picture books and novels for young readers. Patti holds a doctorate in English literature, taught children’s literature and has reviewed for the New York Times. Patti has edited three Caldecott books, including Owl Moon by Jane Yolen and John Schoenherr and So You Want to Be President? by Judith St. George and David Small. She is the editor of COOLIES, the book that inspired Unban Coolies. I am honored to have her on my podcast.

A group of sixty-five Australian Army nursing sisters was evacuated from Malaya a few days before the fall of Singapore. Two days later their ship was bombed and sunk by the Japanese.
