In this case, that was only 5 years. The hospital strongly suggested that Ed, not be released into the custody of his mothers, due to some, very worrisome behavior and thoughts that they had observed in him when it came to his mother Clarnelle. But, of course that was exactly who he went to live with up on his release. And who knows, if it was this decision that led to Ed becoming one of the most prolific serial killers of all time, but it certainly did not help.
