With decades of experience, including time in the Air Force and various law enforcement roles focusing on juveniles, Officer Hernandez found his true calling working within the school environment.He emphasizes that the SRO's role has evolved significantly. Initially focused on bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community – showing students the human side of the badge – the position now integrates critical safety and mental health components, particularly following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas tragedy. Officer Hernandez sees physical security measures, like single points of entry and ID checks using systems like Raptor, as essential layers working in tandem with crucial mental health support. He firmly believes in the value of tools like the Fortify Florida app, which empowers students, parents, and staff to anonymously report concerns, potentially preventing crises before they occur.Officer Hernandez describes the SRO position as wearing "many different hats"—acting as a father figure, an uncle, or even a counselor on any given day. He refutes the notion that students are "targeted," explaining that interactions stem from observed behaviors or needs, always with the goal of support. When concerns arise, he highlights the collaborative threat assessment process involving administrators, counselors, and law enforcement.
