While wisdom, good judgment, and honorable conduct were all considered important, what was considered MOST important was a king’s ability to lead his troops on the battlefield, for the honor and glory of his nation. It is no coincidence that most of the era’s greatest kings also rank among the best military commanders of the period. Of all these, there was perhaps none better than England’s King Edward III.
