Say it with me. Welcome to the podcast. It's our baseball series. Actually, I was trying to find something.
I would say dada dada dada. But I can't. King me out to the ball game. This is kind of our, oh, sorry.
Go on. King me presents. King me out to the ball game. A king me pastime.
That's right. Thank you. So this episode, Dan, is kind of the bottom of the ninth for us. This is the last one.
No one's paying the electric bill on the lights at the field in October. Yeah. Maybe top of the ninth because we have our Friday episode coming out, which is going to wrap up our baseball series, I guess. I guess this is top of the ninth.
I'm not sure a cheapskate, but it's the bottom of the ninth. That's right. And if you don't like, if you want to beat those charges, but don't want to be charged for $5 on your credit card, patreon.com slash kingmepod $5 a month gets you an extra weekly episode of your boys. It's not the boys.
Your boys. Hey, and an extensive backlog. It's true. Years material.
So much. Troves. Treasure Troves. I'll stop short of saying that.
Treasure Troves? Yeah, I'll just call them Troves. Troves are what's it? Lot of what's it?
Yeah. You know, what? Like, for example, I don't know, we're doing baseball right now. So last week on the Friday episode, well, we changed it.
We didn't do draft A, but instead we did eight men out. Eight men out about the black socks. A darker form of money ball. That's right.
Yes. Dark money ball. We did fever pitch. We did.
Not to be confused with the still water song fever dog. And then this Friday. So today's episode, Efis from 2024, is going to be paired with the bad news bears. It's amateur week.
It's amateur week. Every week on Game of the Xameter week. Technically, it's true. Yeah.
It's an interesting way to approach this too, right? We're looking at people at the beginning and end of their baseball lives this week. Yeah. Right.
And I'm scratching my chin. Dan is scratching his chin. Like a dog. He's not fleecing his foot.
He's on my face. He's using his foot to scratch his chin. Anyway. Anyway.
Efis. An independent film. An indie. An indie.
This felt like such a 90s indie movie to me. I know. It was on the same. It felt like this would have looked it up.
They shot everything Massachusetts. Whatever. This feels like when New Jersey was an indie film. Totally.
Fucking film. Had a little indie film boom. But yeah. This is by the way, you mentioned that field.
Soldiers' field. It's a real field. That's really where they shot it. I believe they constructed the little like announcer's box that what's his name.
Franny is calling the game from. Yeah. The end of the game. But it's a very real field.
It's been around like kind of forever. Like I think I remember the director of this Carson Lund talking. He was being interviewed and he was talking about how like I want to say it was like the Yankees and the maybe Red Sox like Barnstormed a bunch of like smaller fields. You know, down the East Coast.
And this was one of them. You could like the Yankees played on like like Babe Ruth like fucking Babe Ruth played at Soldiers' Field. Right. Which like I do feel like adds a dimension to this.
We're talking about these shrubs. Yeah. You know, I we've been talking about this whole series. I don't know.
I mean when it comes to baseball, I don't know. Shinola from that other stuff. But Shinola from Show Hay. But even I've heard of shoulders field.
Shoulders field. Soldiers' field. Yeah. It's like a real place.
Yeah, it's a real place. A pretty nice field too. Gotta say even in its like presence. I don't know.
I'm playing ball in Philadelphia a lot. Yeah. Parks department. Not really.
Not keeping up. Not keeping up. I played in a field a couple of weeks ago and the outfield had like peaks and valleys. I'll say.
Ups and downs. Ups and downs. Yeah. So like track.
Yeah. Like I don't know. I'm very much related to the left fielder. The big fat guy with the beard.
Yeah. Been there. And yeah. I saw your review.
Yeah. But yeah, it's like a lot of that and a lot of like grass up to your ankles which like especially with spikes on it's like running in sand. Oh. Get it.
So. All for the love of ball. The love of the game. It's the child's game.
It is. And it's a that's kind of what this movie is about. It's just like. I mean it's the question it asks.
It's like why do you keep. Why are you doing this? Why are you doing this? And it's so funny in this especially because like these guys are not friends.
Like there's nothing tying them together except for this. Except the game. And it matters so much. Yeah.
I mean like I was like like it it does matter on like a deeper level even though in this movie. Like several times people are just like all right I'm leaving. And they're just like they just take off. They're done.
Which by the way when the the full cast of the safti brother like the safti brothers guys show up to take away the other safti brothers guy. Yeah. It's such a I mean like this movie is so sleepy. Yes.
And then you get that moment as such a fucking jolt. Yes. Like wait what? Yeah the guy who played let's see.
He's in the movie his name is Al but his name is Wayne Diamond. Of course it is. And Wayne was in the game. It's probably his name right.
Yeah. Yeah. Uncut gems. Uncut gems.
And he plays like high roller or whatever he uncut gems. Yes. William Richards. Yes.
Different guy. Different guy plays Ed has a big role in this movie is a picture here but Ed was or I'm sorry Keith is what he's one of. What's the fucking guy's name? Oh no I can't think of his name.
And I'm kind of gems like the brother in law that is like a press in. Oh I don't I don't know anybody's name. And I did see it. Yeah.
And you know what I'm gonna I'm gonna oh right yes I forgot that was him. Yeah. What's his name? Eric.
Eric. Right. I think Eric. Here's what I'll say while you're doing that.
Yeah. Talk about uncut gems. Oh it's so stressful. I hate watching it.
It's so stressful. Eric Bogosian. Eric Bogosian of course. The Armenian fellow.
Yes. Yeah people talk about how stressful that movie is and it is. I think good time is like is way worse. So much worse.
Holy shit. I think so I watched him in like some chronological order so I watch good time first and then which put me way over the edge of anxiety. Yes. The whole movie is just constantly just like ratcheting it up and everything that happens is just like this is the worst thing.
Right. Yeah. It's not just that it's stressful. It's like this is so fucking depressing.
It's so depressing. It's so fucked up. Yes. Like every scene like especially like the last like 45 minutes or whatever.
He drowns the guy with LSD. Yeah. That scene when he's like I almost like when he's in that like 15 year old girl's house or whatever. Jesus Christ.
The whole movie you're just like you're pacing you're like sort of toggling between like Jesus Christ and oh my god. Yeah. And then like final moment that plays out over the credits is like such a fucking gut punch. Oh yeah.
That would be as relentless. Yeah. I mean the time is kind of a good time in comparison. Yeah.
I feel like the finality of death with the release of that. Sure. You're just like okay. Oh my god.
At least he's you know he's at peace now. He's found he'll never make another parlach. Yeah. He's in he's in gamblers heaven paradise.
Right. Right. Yeah. I mean like right on touch emphasis.
It's it's they do the same sort of thing but I I I agree. I didn't I didn't feel like no it wasn't the same kind of thing. The whole time I was like well I this is not what I would do. I feel like I think the difference for me is like gambling doesn't feel like existentially dreadful as like like to me there's such a clear off ramp for gambling which is just stop doing it.
Sure. Right. Like I know it's like yeah no no yeah of course people are addicted to gambling but it does feel like in good time you watch it and you're like every scene is like because this happened. Now he's here and he's got to get out of this situation and so on and so on.
Right. And it's like you really feel the way like their whole lives from like the second they were born brought them here. Yeah. Yeah.
I love that movie too. I mean they're both really good. Yeah. They're both good times.
Well okay. Efis. Efis. Sort of a different wavelength than say a Saffte Brothers movie.
Yeah not the same. A lot of ways. Here's a question. Do you recognize anybody from this picture besides the good time guys?
No I don't think I'm not. You know I'm not a gem guys. No. Me neither.
I think that's okay. I don't think I don't think there's really anyone to. Yeah they all that's the other thing. They all kind of just look like guys.
Yeah. Which I like. More guys right? Yeah.
Like so nice to see a guy who looks like Santa Claus in a movie playing someone else entirely for once. Yeah. But we were talking right before we started about how this movie is not super plot heavy. No it's not.
Which is okay. Sure. It gives it like I don't know. I think like I called it baseball perfect days which is not quite fair because these are all like bitter New England style men.
Yeah. But yeah it's kind of I mean the premise of the movie is so simple and I think funny and like one in a series of not necessarily sports movie tropes but movie tropes that it kind of like plays on and then abandons are like doesn't pay off in the conventional way where like basically these guys playing on this field. Soldiers field. Yes.
Men's league mentally games on the field and it's being decommissioned for. Yeah the field is being. They're going to build a school where the field is. Yeah.
And it's treated as like this injustice. It's not but like not even kind of drastic. Yeah. Injustice but everybody's just kind of like.
But you really don't fucking school right. I think it's it is the one pitcher and who's like I'm going to do fucking art class. Yeah. It's like maybe is like someone's like yeah my niece goes there is going to go there.
He's like yeah well maybe she can draw a fucking picture of me throwing nine innings. Yeah. You know and it's like I get it. I'm kind of like go build the school somewhere else.
What a special thing to just like throw away. Let's see. This is I was watching this movie and the entire time I was I was thinking of you and how you're part of your baseball league. Yeah.
Right. That's exactly how it goes but maybe like you could probably relate to all of this a bit more than I can definitely the part after the umpires leave. Yeah. Right.
Like yeah and then I don't know the one for light. Yeah. Fighting for light. You know who is getting too drunk during the game maybe you know like too high.
That's more common. Yeah. I mean like who's like just ripping their vape the entire time and then being like by the seventh inning completely zonked. I've told you that like because I played with a couple teams one of the teams is part of what's called the doc Ellis league.
Can I explain this? I know who doc Ellis is. Yeah. Everybody is just fucking yeah not like not every game but like there is sort of like a big there's like an annual like everyone sort of all these teams from the east coast like in Virgion this like field in you know few states over and like everyone's just like on shrooms and see this.
That it's silly the doc Ellis thing of him pitching a no hitter right on acid right. I did watch that documentary from maybe like 10 years ago or something and it was good I liked a lot but then hearing like the doc Ellis team or league or whatever it sounds like when somebody is like if you get like a thousand monkeys in a room with typewriters they can they could get which you know Shakespeare eventually they'll eventually write Hamlet. Yeah. You're like well yeah I guess if you get ahold of the ego people on acid maybe someday.
Especially in all skill levels. That's what I mean. Yeah. It's just be the only way.
It's the only way to. But yeah I mean like definitely I think there's like a couple you know it's like yeah so in the most direct sense the thing I sort of jived with was like oh yeah there's like these people who wouldn't know each other otherwise is yeah don't necessarily know each other super well otherwise. The vibes are definitely different you know these are much like duder sort of guys. You know dude Lear manly.
Oh these guys yeah yeah but it's like he's also set in the 90s. Did you actually set the 90s? I believe it is. Okay.
Yeah yeah I couldn't quite tell it feels very sort of like out of time. It does feel out of time but I'm pretty sure like I am pretty sure that it's set in the 90s yeah so I'm especially the fact like not one person has a cell phone. Yeah. That's to not I you know it could be a choice but also that's not possible I don't think.
Yeah yeah. To not have at least one person in the dugout like looking at their phone especially with people who are like anxious to leave. Exactly you know yeah yeah it does it kind of feels like a choice. I got like a little stuck out of time vibes because like people are driving like different ages of cars but they are but nothing after like a certain point.
Maybe not maybe not. That also could just be like the town. Could be the town. Economics.
Well the other thing is like it felt in keeping with like the approach to like costuming these guys which is like it seems like everyone just has their uniform from when they first joined. Yeah. These relics right like it's like there's like and it gives it this cool effect of like the whole history of this thing right like you you have one game to get across it like this has been going on forever and I feel like stuff like the different ages of cars the guy is like showing up and keeping score every game. Yeah.
And the uniforms like that's such like a clear visual representation of like why this matters sure right and it's a it's kind of a hard sell otherwise because it's just like guys drinking beer and being mean to each other. That's yeah it's really what it is. Yeah. But even that the drinking beer and like being mean to each other.
There's a place for it. There is an important part of life. Kind of like that's you were saying like these guys aren't even really friends which I think I agree like at one point somebody says like hey we should all meet up for beers like in the winter or something. Yeah.
And everybody's like yeah well you have everybody's contact. Yeah. You know like yeah you figure that out. But at the same time it does feel like you know yeah they want to play of course but it is also the ball breaking and that that sort of thing totally where they're like oh well I don't really have an opportunity to right yeah chops this hard anywhere else.
I guess yeah it is just like a little pocket universe. Kind of yeah. And it's like why does this feel so bad that it's ending when like none of it fucking matters is like well because an entire universe is blinking out of existence. Yeah.
Right. And it's like I do love the runner of like well there's still the league in whatever town like it's two towns over so far. It's like a half an hour. I'm not going two towns over.
And it feels like a little bit like yeah it's a half hour. It's also just like do you I think I don't know there's a couple ways to look at it. And one is like the idea of like starting over is just scary generally. Yeah.
But then also just like that feeling of like well it's not this. It's what would be the point if it's not this. Yeah. The whole like hey you're going to go play for was it Duster Duster Duster.
Yes I'm like I don't know if it's Duster and it's just Massachusetts acts anyone. Yes. Who knows who knows. It's spelled like Dallas Esther right.
But it does sort of feel like you're right like it's not the same as this like it's not the thing that I know. Yeah. It's not the team that I know it what if they take it more seriously or less seriously. You know what I mean?
That's that was the other thing I really liked about this is like and that felt familiar to me is like man is this a take all comers kind of league. Where it's like you got again not to harp on this big belly man but like but nobody isn't shaping this. Nobody is the way that they're like and like yeah nobody's in shape except there's like one stud right or like one or two guys who are like there are a couple like younger guys. Yeah.
One guy is like playing community college ball and trying not to wash off of the community college baseball team. Correct. Then there's that one guy on the Adler's paint team who's just like just visualize it. The guy who the guy who the guy who hits a homerun.
Okay. Yeah. The like other young guy. Yeah.
And so you got like a couple of those guys but the guy who's in like their 50s. Yeah. Wishing 60 maybe. I mean the fucking what's the guy who plays Ed the guy from Uncut Gems.
How fucking old is that? 1963. Right. So the guy's 62 years old or you know about 60 years old or whatever.
Also from New Jersey. Shout out. Shout out to boy. Garden State excellence.
But yeah I mean yes you know not a lot of young studs on this team. It's a lot of like beer bellies and yeah even like the one pitcher guy who's just getting like hammered the whole game like he's just progressively getting more drunk. Yeah. And then by the end he's just like I can't.
The guy on the River Dogs. Like the yeah. Yeah. For guys name the guy who's like alright I'm taking starter.
Is it Troy? Yeah. I'm taking starter Troy out. Yeah.
I'm putting reliever Troy in. Yeah. He's like what does that mean? Yeah.
To the end where it's like you finally they finally take him out he just goes in the lays in the outfield. Yes. Yeah. But what we're saying about that.
Oh just like this the take all comers kind of a perfect. Yeah. And there's something like beautiful about that too. It was like it yeah it's like a like an island of misfit toys kind of thing.
Yeah. Which I'm all about that. Totally. Yeah.
Like this is a trope of like sports movies especially. And usually there's. Well usually there's only one underdog team and they're not playing each other. That's the difference I think.
Yeah. But that's like I think that's so beautiful. It is. Every opportunity like this movie sets up so many like starting off points for like conventional sports and areas of like triumph.
Yes. And it's just like no. No. That's beside the point.
Yeah. There's no right. That is the end. Another thing about this is like there's no good team and bad team as far as like good guys and bad guys.
Right. Not red and blue. It's not like rooting for either team to win. Yeah.
You're kind of like honestly you're just like you know by the end of it they're playing in the dark and with the car headlights on and you're just kind of like yeah I mean they just got to keep playing. They just want to keep the game going. They have to finish the game and you know it's not has nothing to do with like really like everybody's done. Oh yeah.
They want to go home. That's the other thing too is like these old men they're like most of them don't even have this like sense of pride about the whole situation necessarily where or at least I didn't feel that way. Where it was just like you know like I'm leaving. I'm going to leave.
We don't fucking wrap this up soon. I'm going to leave. Yeah. It varies so widely too right.
Like you get you get those guys and they're like a couple guys who are like we got to give this field a send off. Yeah. It's like what is that I brought firework one guy did bring fireworks and yeah what a great ending. Yeah I mean like the fireworks to like even we see some of it right.
We don't see them. We don't see them. We don't see them. I forget like flashing.
Yeah it's just trained the cameras is trained on is it branch the uh no not branch. Right. Graham like like captain of the river dogs. Yes.
Just we just see flashes of light on him. And he walks away. Yeah. I believe that's like the end of the movie right.
Just about yeah I think it like it wraps up with Franny. Oh that's right. Franny of course. Yeah but yeah so you don't even get like the payoff of that and then like um I mean like the way the game ends even denies the sort of like fairness of a tie.
Yes. Right. Where it's like he fucking blows it. Yeah.
The one guy who's like playing even remotely competitive baseball league still outside of this. He just blows it. Yeah. Even based on a call from a guy 30 feet away basically.
Yes. It's just like it's all just like so sort of happenstance. Like all of this is just like left a chance and uh it also it feels like the end the end you know the final moments of the game itself when they walk one guy gets walked in and you like the call is made basically by Franny who's up in the announcer's box like way the fuck away. I mean we get the POV shot of that pitch coming in.
Right. Which is so great because it's like you're like it's it's so dark. So like you can't see shit. It feels like that moment that story or whatever like these guys you know maybe not like in five years but in ten years or whatever they're drinking and you know like oh yeah I played on that field the last game fucking guy walked in.
Yeah. You know Franny's up in the fucking thing and he's you know he's making the calls. He's 50 feet away pitch blackout. Yeah.
It's a bullshit call but you know that was the last game we played on on Soldiers Field. Even like yeah this is like you know what was it last is the last week when we talked money ball right. Yeah. You know how can you not get romantic about baseball.
This movie. Well no I think this movie is like very romantic about baseball but on the on in like the most like the smallest microcosm of like you know you have like huge games of course and like major league baseball and like that is kind of where everybody like puts their hearts into the game right. Sure. They back their team you know plays are made and missed and whatever and it's it's it's mistakes feel so high right exactly and then like this is like solo level.
Yeah. Any less important mistakes don't exist right but it is just these guys who are like all out of shape they'll have like maybe some of them have families some don't and it's just like they just like they want to play but in like not even in this super driven way they just like want to play. Yeah. That's it.
It's like I think yeah so I agree and I think like I think it's interesting to sort of like deconstruct not really deconstruct the game but I guess like pull away all the window dressing only to find that it's the exact same thing. Yeah. Like like no matter how much you take away from it unless you like build a school on top of a field right if you don't build it they will come basically. Yeah.
Like there's just something that draws people in and it can't it can't really be explained. You can just kind of like show a bunch of different people going through it. Yeah. Seeing what they're doing to not give it up.
Yeah. It's yeah. I don't know. There's a moment where one of the one the characters here his family is there his wife and daughter right.
Yeah. Another yeah another great like denial of the moment. Yes. Like the poetic moment.
The poetic moment right. So they like you know the wife and daughter are there like all day you know watching this game you know they're to support you know dad the husband and whatever but also like they could not give a shit about this game. Yeah. Right.
They don't really care but they're there to support him and then eventually the wife goes up and she's like hey you know she's getting really cold it's getting cold out here. Like we're pretty much done he's like no I'm gonna be up at bat you can leave right after this right and it any other kind of like movie that's gonna that's going for like some big sort of emotional beat. They're like okay he hits a home run or he hits like he gets on base. He does something he walks.
He walks. He doesn't do anything he strikes out right and then he goes back to the dugout his you know his family leaves he goes back to the dugout and he just sort of like he's the way that he stares off the way like it's like fucking Vietnam but that yeah like stare and he just says like I might be the last time that my daughter sees you know her father you know up at bat and then one guy next to him is like now they're too young to remember any of that he's like they're 12 and 13 and he's like wow well then they you know they saw you struck out they probably think it's funny you know whatever but he's just like oh man it reminded there's this fucking like clip this like video of this guy saw it's from a few months ago whatever on TikTok and this guy and he's sitting like outside or whatever and he has this spool of wire. Have you seen this? You know it's okay.
So he has a spool of wire that I know context for it whatsoever he's just like I've had this for like 20 years I've had this spool of wire like doing and using it periodically or whatever and it's almost out. You know and he's saying this to his wife who's holding the phone and he's like this has been with me for like 20 years like when I got this like I was a different person and he starts getting like very existential about the whole thing and then his wife is just like yeah but why are you wearing that stupid fucking hat or whatever right and then he's like alright never mind never mind like and it felt like the same thing where it's just like this was such like the guy here the father the husband he's just like oh man like I am old now and like I you know how many other opportunities they're gonna have to fucking play baseball at all yeah and you know I'm not they don't give a shit right but also like I guess that's it for me I think that's sort of like one of the beautiful things about the beautiful game I mean any game really but like what the beautiful game I feel like baseball is like this perfect balancing act of like being a team sport and like an individual effort yeah you know like there's so much room to showcase what you yourself do as like a hitter or whatever and then like as part of like a defensive unit blah blah blah blah all this is to say like these guys all really like like with baseball like you just get out what you put into it like there's so much room to project onto the game I don't know if it's unique to this but it just like work it just works so well and I like that moment too because it's sort of like shot called like it mirrors one of the first at bat to the game where the young guy on Adler's paint strikes out while his girlfriend is there oh yeah so we get this like beginning in it right it's like you watch him do it you're like oh he's young right it feels like again perfect days that like young buck who's like I got to spend all my money to like impress this girl or whatever except here the payoff is like yeah you actually just never stop doing that yeah yeah right yeah actually get used to this I guess yeah you're never gonna stop seeking approval from other people and also it's never gonna be enough right and you'll never do it yeah like you will never get the approval that you want yep yeah so open and close yeah that's what's nice about this movie I'm trying to think so we do have like a few spectators who like kind of come in and out we have the like skateboard kids the skateboard kids who come and they yeah they're there for a little while they're just like talking some shit yeah but I do sort of like they have like a little micro arc where like we cut back to them later and like I've been watching this for like two hours and I still don't understand the baseball so I guess the arc like with everyone is like nothing changes by the end of it it's like they just lose something it's the movie about losing something yeah losing time whatever it's a little bit like and I want to stress a little bit underline little here it's a little bit like Twin Peaks the return where the lights just go out at the end oh sure yeah it's just it is just over yeah you run out of ways to I'm watching Twin Peaks again I've loved it picked it I'm on to season two now I want to watch I specifically want to I should watch the whole thing again but I just want to do the return again I'd so that's honestly that's kind of where I'm at too I really want to rewatch the return yeah but I'm also you're earning it it's kind of earning it's also like it's fun to watch the original series too like just seeing like Cooper being Cooper and you know doing all that shit like seeing all these people also like having hindsight of now the return and you go back and you watch like the first you know two seasons or whatever and you're like this doesn't matter and this character that you know I love and it's up in such a fucking dark place and all of these things like it's just you know it's just there's 25 years it's everybody is like very different by the return and some people don't even make it to the return they're dead yeah and it's like oh this is like pretty it's like weirdly it's sad and nostalgic in the same kind of way yeah I don't know it's good though it's fucking the series just still rules you know dictraming everything again it blows my mind watching this this will be my third watch through now blows my mind that people were like into this show in like oh this is like a fun like we're having coffee and cherry pie parties to watch Twin Peaks and like this is so fucking dark what are you talking about I know you're just proving his point you know yeah just proving Dave's point you guys are all sick of those I saw some like an interview with Lynch and Con the Glockman from like it must have been like right after a fire walk with me premiered and they're you know where are they rubbing their temples the whole time the interviewer is like there's a lot of sex in this movie there's a lot of violence there's a lot of sexual violence and you know what do you think about that and all this stuff and you're like there is you are correct and like yeah oh he's basically just like hopefully this like some contact like McLaughlin especially is just like it really sort of lends context to the original series where you were like you saw these things the aftermath of all this stuff but then you see what actually happened and it's so awful yeah that you like you have now like a foundation for like all these other things that are happening what matters and what doesn't in all the condition yeah I feel like sort of not to draw parallels between these two things do are extremely different but like sort of in the same way that like that and the return like doesn't pull any punches and like sort of the romanticizing in the right word but like yeah we'll say de-romanticizes like the violence of it you know like the way that it's sort of like it can be scintillating and entertaining or whatever yeah I think this movie also does that I want to take back something I said before where I said it's not poetic it's very poetic that's like it's just not it's not glossy or like there's a moment of like fucking Ray Charles singing America the Beautiful right well while while baseball by firework light yeah right that's a good scene though it's a great scene but you're right it's not that movie this is not that movie and in fact like the fireworks thing does happen right like again there it's like check-offs fireworks and like I kind of wish that a gun gets fired off screen at nothing so when you hear like a bottle break yes yeah I kind of wish that this movie just had the cast of the sand lot but it was the exact same movie Efis like as sort of just like just a grumpy and yeah yeah it's exactly the same and like whatever doesn't have to be is the sand lot too but it's just like those guys those guys like all grown up to be in like good but Wayne Diamond. Wayne Diamond is a little bit he's still gonna roll through it yeah yeah he's got a little bit of a wane it wanes like I'm not getting out of the car okay oh man you can get in the car but I'm not getting out of the car he's such a he's such a stud he's so good he's fucking nuts shows up screams for like a minute and a half and things out and who's um the old movie producer oh Robert yeah I we're both thinking of him yeah yeah the kid stays in the picture why am I forgetting is he had an animated series about him on Comedy Central of course he did have an evidence and I believe it was called Kid Dangerous Robert Evans yeah yeah it was yeah was it a lot you betcha was I up to the task I don't know he is wearing those Robert Evans sunglasses he is everybody's got like a super tan skin like the platinum white hair yeah that's a level of white hair that like I don't know it's it's crazy you you feel you're like that's like cotton candy hair it's so strange the texture of it looks so weird most people have to have like a ghost possess them they need to be right flown through they need yeah they need to see something so scary it turns their hair white maybe they're possessed by an evil Bob spirit and you know they they they come back in season two with white hair yeah um what else what else happens here so I did like the moment with the kids who I guess are sorry we don't know anybody's names but it's kind of hard to know it's it's hard to know because nobody also like everybody kind of looks not exactly the same but pretty close yeah like um but that guy's kid the guy who strikes out kids yeah are there yes and they're like watching the game and saying things like don't they have more important stuff to do yeah and it's like it's like funny right that the kids are like this is silly or whatever but there's also like a I think an element of fear in that right it's like a realization these kids are having where it's like wait this is still this is as important as oh no oh no yeah i'm just yeah that's bad I guess for the kids to know about and then you get like the dramatic irony right of the dad being like I want them to see my last day back and they're just like what the fuck are we doing yeah right yeah right it couldn't matter any less to them yeah what do you think of the pizza guy um the pizza guy I liked him I like this whole like uh that's a funny thing to have like just oh it's a truck like a food a food truck essentially yeah that makes pizzas or slices whatever and he's like I fucking hate this I hate pizza he's like uh I might try I might take it across country I don't know I don't know I just I just fucking hate it so much yeah it feels like it's trying to like I don't know I don't know how that fits into the bigger picture there's movie I don't know if it does I think he's just there yeah I mean like it fits in in that like not it feels like the same like just an adjacent story that's going on at the same time like these guys playing ball they've been playing there for however long and this pizza guy has also been there for however long and he has a story too yes and it involves you know every day that he woke up and he was like fuck I hate this and he you know it still has to go to the ball field and like sell five slices yeah exactly by the way doesn't have to but does but can't help doing it can't help I mean I guess that's also this is just the thing that happens is like people get stuck in that's stuck necessarily but you form like a routine and whatever yeah and you're like you know especially you get older and you're like this is my life all right I have a job I have a family or whatever yeah and then like I've been doing this thing for so long that I just want to keep doing it and whatever and it is like I have a podcast that I want to keep fucking doing and yeah it does become a thing where it's like I think you get it's somewhere in between like it being the thing you look forward to doing yeah because you enjoy it yeah and because you remember how much you enjoyed it when you first started doing it yeah and like life is just so kind of cold and miserable that like it's a safe space right like it is it's kind of a safe space to just be like yeah this right everything else is like same thing like a lot of these movies that we've watched it's like yeah there's so much shit going on outside of the game itself but they're like the way that people talk about the game is just like now this is like when things become like clear and you can you know they become simple and you can you can just play or you can like you don't have to think about the other shit going on in your life and just focus on the game yeah I mean it's true I think somebody even like in in Bull Durham there's a part where Crash says to oh when he says that he likes long wet kisses that last for three days well yeah he does say that I'm gonna pull that clip I'm just gonna put it on the board I'm gonna say that or are you talking about when he says that the novels of Susan Sontag are overrated crap no it's what's Tim Robbins saying okay nuke nuke of course every nuke of course every nuke of course every nuke of course I was thinking about this real quick yeah I know you got a point here no no no no I was just gonna say that like somebody in in Bull Durham Crash says to nuke like stop throwing so many strikes throw some ground balls right and somebody says that line yeah somebody says that line in this movie that's strikeouts or fashions strikeouts or fashions which no they're not yeah yeah that's I think sorry I gotta I gotta advocate for sitting bitches down you know hit the ball if you want if you want to have a grand ball hit the chatter well don't tell you well yeah you're as a pitcher yeah yeah yeah that's my challenge to you is better hey I'm throwing the ball you hit it don't just stand there like an asshole when I throw you a front door slide and it breaks over the plate idiot you want to hit it hit it otherwise like it's dropping so you're gonna you're gonna top it anyway it's gonna hit the ground so just swing yeah this is like such a I do like this is like a joking thing I like I say a lot which is like it is just baseball fashions like it brings out the fashions that mean when I want to win this bad right sure it's like oh it's so gross but it's like again it's a safe space to just like be a kind of an asshole yeah and then just drop it especially cuz like is that is that yeah I'm sorry going going oh just like because you I mean this is also a sort of cliche that baseball is a game of failure and like you're down as much as you're up sure so to like to like really just sort of like get high on those moments of like I'm getting shelled as much as I'm freaking people out yeah I mean like that's like that's also kind of life isn't it it's a perfect game it's got oh man all right isn't that interesting episode four of our baseball series here I'm like yeah I think baseball might be perfect game it I mean like it that is you know that is like I mean it's mostly like you know bad shit or like stuff you don't want to deal with at all yeah and then like sometimes good shit happens and you're like oh thank god this is like so um this is the count I don't even know if I follow it on this around but I see this guy's videos a lot he's just I'm like I don't think he's like a pro I don't know if he's like a pro player or amateur like high level amateur or what but he is like very focused on hitting and like breaking down mechanics and just like the process he's like I just was watching one that was like here's how I use my first at bat for my second at bat and you watch the first one he was like he got struck out and he's explaining why he's like my mistake wasn't like you know it was like my mistake was like watching two good pitches like two hitable pitches go by without trying and I know that he's gonna like this pitcher is gonna put them over the plate so I got it at least try and it's like just that thing of like you need to you need to like remember every detail of your failure like saber your failure and like turn it out switch it around in your mouth yeah so that you can understand how to like get past it and that's every game obviously but it is yeah but there's but baseball so meditative I think in a way that other sports are not there's so much time to sit there with your family or time yeah which is another thing that this movie is kind of about is like all of the downtime yes because we like as much as we do see the game happening or whatever but we're not super focused on it we are focused it's really just for like we're characters and whatever totally and it's a lot of people like sitting in the dugout and fucking talking and the footed like the gameplay we do see is not always like home runs or whatever it's mostly it's a lot of like dribblers and like guys throwing just like sort of lollipop throws to first yes and then being like good fucking play yeah it's like that I really relate to yeah like just making the most like routine playing like let's go yeah yeah that's awesome right like the one guy hits the home run yeah right out of the park home run and that's when like we get like a slow motion of him like running around that is the closest thing that we get to like any sort of like victory yeah yeah like yeah sort of like cinematic yes it's like and everybody's like oh like the other team is like a good job and whatever else because nobody is just like it's a fun game yeah you know but it is like like yeah I don't know the guy did good you hit home run yeah right I was wondering about that too yeah because like it moves in slow and then like visually it all kind of changes and like I think that just must be how it feels to suck a dinger yeah I mean like I'm king of the castle right for like a second it's the same thing you're saying it's like mostly it's failure and then sometimes you have a whole run and you just gotta live in that moment yeah yeah this is like you know not necessarily what the whole day has been about but now it is yeah you know so it'd be so cool um also I do love the uh the aspect of that too where it's like well there goes one of our game balls right nobody brought a bucket so we don't have a bucket gotta go find more balls yeah go find more balls yeah and like guys just go missing in the woods for like extended stretches just looking for balls I love the like um right it's that one guy who I guess is like a uh an army vet or something the guy talking about combat yeah yeah and he like comes in from looking for balls yes while another guy go like they basically it's like a changing of the guard right like punch in right out right there right the one guy yeah he's like I found I found my ball and the guy's like well we just lost three more so I gotta go find those yeah yeah and it's like yeah I don't know it's good and it otherwise it's like twin peaks in the woods oh the woods we think about kids smoking a cigarette what do you make of that hmm um I mean him getting freaked out and running away yeah um I don't know I mean like nothing happened like it wasn't like that that guy was gonna like yell at him or anything like that yeah just seemed like the kid was you know just about to rip a dart yeah out in the woods and he got shy got fucking freaked out saw somebody I took off but he was in trouble yeah I think the presence of children in this movie is just like inherently very interesting because it's like these are just gross old men yeah and like what does it mean you know like what does it mean to be at a point in your life where there's still possibility and opportunity yeah well man I don't think I've ever I've never been to a game like this like just a casual yeah like nothing I mean like even you know as an adult I've never seen but like even when I was a kid I don't really remember them being like any sort of like the vent or like family picnic or any bullshit where I was like oh they're playing a game yeah like the grown-ups are playing something you know I mean like never happened yeah um which is it's fine or whatever I it well like yeah the presence of children in this movie and them having like their whole life but then like you got those two kids up in the announcer's box being like should they be doing something more important than whatever like what is being a grown-up right you know you know and like everybody's just kind of like I don't know I mean that's sort of it is like the outside world thinks this is silly it does but it's also I don't know it feels almost like a like the first time that you realize like grown-ups don't have it figured out you know and you're like like again Bull Durham when Crash says hey he's just your father right he's just as full shit as anybody else just I love that line it's a great line um but yeah like you you know when your kid you think your parents are like all-knowing although I feel like if that's your dad be hard to think like I thought he was Superman is God hanging over his tight ass baseball pants they fought two sizes ago yes um yeah it's true and then we also have like the super old guy who's there the space man no not a space man oh uh the guy washing yeah um who leaves who leaves and he's wearing like a nashua baseball hat too so he's just like I don't know there's something almost like hopeful in that where it's like oh when you age out of it you just find other game you just watch you just watch um I like that guy yeah right and then I don't know there's something to that too where he's like you know the game it's whatever seventh inning or something and it's tied and he's like the old guy goes up to Franny and he's like well I'm getting out of here and he's like well you're leaving it's all tied up and then he explains it's Franny explains he's like it's almost like a reset like now everybody's back to the same level playing field here and like you have to you know get back right it's like all those like all those good plays right you know those strikeouts they don't count for anything they got to drop all that they got to drop all that yeah and I like the old man's just like nah tie I can go to sleep I can go to sleep at a tie yeah which is like such a it feels like the you know the wisdom of age or whatever where it's just like the way you just chill out over stuff as you know they're allegedly still waiting still waiting yeah the way that shit like doesn't matter yeah yeah um we didn't I mean anything to say about space man really I just like that he's here yeah so the bill space manly is in this year film bill space manly was a pro ball player from let's see 1969 to about 1982 yeah um he's a uh left to be a little character is he oh in this movie is no no in real life he's just kind of this sort of the my understanding is like the space man that's how we got that nickname is because he's like a fucking weirdo oh I mean he does seem like a strange guy here like when he does that he's like now I'm ready to go and he like kicks up his leg and hits it with his hand you know does that like weird stretch kind of thing yep and he's like ready all right all right um that's really good um Dan I'm gonna grab a beer would you like I know not a beer but would you like something yeah sure all right we'll be right back and we're back we're back um so we're talking about bill space manly space man sort of uh yeah a bit of an odd duck yeah he comes out of nowhere comes out of nowhere oh you're talking in the movie in the mood oh yeah yeah you want to get into his political war I feel like just acknowledging a couple we should let's see it's like yeah earned his nickname during his career was an outspoken supporter of Maoist China population control green piece and and certain busing programs doesn't really go into detail here this is citation needed but apparently he threatened to bite off an umpire zero over a bad call um and I do like he like ran for governor is like a third party candidate third party lunatic yeah and Vermont yeah exactly exactly uh in in 2016 um uh he said the campaign slogan was so far left we're right um and describes himself as he likes Bernie Sanders but describes himself as Bernie heavy and not Bernie light so he's like uh yeah it's a bit of a lefty yeah but he's also like an oddball where he like had like a gag campaign in the 80s where he ran under the rhinoceros party uh and was running on a platform of bulldozing the Rocky Mountains so that Alberta could get more sunlight he's just a funny guy and then he someone like he was like asked while he was playing about like mandatory drug testing like for players yeah he said well I've tried them all but I wouldn't want to make it mandatory that's a good line that's a good line line uh I just see this in uh on my computer here in his 1984 book the wrong stuff he claimed that his marijuana use had made him impervious to bus fumes while jogging to work at Fenway that's a crazy thing to say well he sounds pretty confident um you don't just say that if you're not sure yeah no this guy sounds like a good time to be around I guess he's he's pretty cool he um he was an e-fist picture like that was in his repertoire now when you say that you mean a picture that appears in the movie e-fist that we're talking about yes I do okay but that's not all I mean what two movies called e-fist Rob yeah go on and uh did you know what an e-fist was before course not okay I've I know what like the construction material e-fist is what is that it's it's sort of like a um it's like a sighting that uh goes up on like um uh what's it called like uh like outside of a target or something when there's like rocky kind of like stuff like stucco looking stuff like stucco okay is it spelled the same way I don't know okay um it's interesting but what is this e-fist baseball well they define it in the film but in the simplest terms please e-fist it's e-fist is just like a slow high arcing pitch so like obviously normally you're pitching trying to throw fast and like ideally ideally and like in the strike zone but this one it just like it goes 10 15 it's like a lob it's like a lob yeah um and the idea is like you throw people off with the speed right you're throwing it like 20 miles an hour or whatever where you're just so slow so slow and that's what they say in the movie they're like it just if you do it right it just hangs up there forever right which does later happen with the foul ball which I thought was so funny oh I remember that yes and they're like did anybody see it at least hear it land yeah um it's like a Samuel Beckett play it's just like um but yeah so bill Lee like everyone in this movie appears out of the woods yeah he just wanders up and uh who's he pitched for is it the the river dogs I don't know he pitches for someone needs a pitcher and uh they're like and he's talking about how he you know he used to play or whatever and they're like can you pitch he's like I can get you three outs yeah all right that's what he says a couple times they put him in and he does he gets some three outs and then he's gone yeah immediately he walks away and everybody's like where's Lee where's Lee yeah this fucking gone yeah um uh yeah he's passing by it's just like hey can I essentially like I used to play on this field I used to you know play a little ball in my day yeah when if I jump in here pitch an inning and uh cut out like I guess it's it's like again it's like a like a gonzo field of dreams yeah it's like this actual major league baseball player yes it just walks out of the ether yeah and instead of being dead he's old yes not quite dead yeah and just jumps in um yeah that's fun yeah uh so yeah the game you know continues until uh starting a dark out right so the movie is like broken up into segments by like time of day or chapters I guess um and like the umpire leaves umpire goes home he's like all right I'm done and everybody's like oh come on we didn't finish the game he's like I'll get paid for overtime and it's getting dark out here I like when the one guy try again like it never it doesn't pay off it doesn't work out right there's like the one guy on first you like brought the fireworks yeah he's talking to the umpire in the field and he's like he's like listen I got a couple pork loins the size of your arm and he's like I'll you know I'll give him to you if you can talk the home plate on been to staying longer yeah yeah like I'll see what I can do and then just it never never materializes they they don't talk the umpires just like I'm leaving and then the other guys like shit I guess I'm leaving too yeah and yeah so they're uh is that who's on is it just like immediately what's his name is I'm firing yeah I think Franny after that they're like yeah they basically give it to Franny did we do a good job setting up who Franny is Franny is to the extent that anybody's anyone in this yeah Franny's a spectator he's a guy he he shows up he's like the first character that we see in the movie we see him walk up to the field like just outside the like the fence uh set up a chair and a little table and get his scorebook scorebook out and he's just keeping track of the entire game you know meticulous yeah and we get this everyone knows him so he does this every week whatever it's just nice just nice that a guy carries that much yeah I mean again it's one of these things where he's just like yeah no this matters but I have to smaller people it doesn't matter yeah yeah that's nice so Franny gets stuck on firing after the arms go home yeah and and they're like well do you have pads and he's like no I'll do it from first he says from behind the fence yeah and everybody's like all right well and then he goes up into the announcer's box and they're like all right you know every I guess it's like the honor system and then like Franny'll just make the final call or whatever um Sonny's going down there are no lights at this park so it's just getting darker yeah um and this is like again things I relate to personally yeah many such cases of like losing daylight nobody wants to stop playing and at a certain point you're like well all the balls are dirty they're the same color as this guy as the night yeah exactly I remember like we used to play on this field where like there were lights but there were trees grown in front of them so it was like people were taking batting practice and you couldn't see anything it was like doing it blindfold it was very scary very dangerous don't do that I really liked the depiction of night in this movie where it just feels like oh this is like kind of what it feels like at night with no lights on yeah like it's just progressively getting darker here and that's sort of like great outlook when you look at the last little bit of light yes the last sliver of light as it's going on you can't like I don't know it brought me it did kind of bring it back to like being a kid and like just being outside yeah at that time and just being like like almost smell it yeah you know like just that outside air it's autumn right all that kind of shit yeah where like you see people's breath and you're like I want to be that cold exactly that cold exactly like oh yeah so I don't know there are like these elements I guess of like nostalgia or like sort of just like cozy yeah yeah yeah like I want that I know that I love it the um we talk about space man and his the eve is pitcher whatever um but the other pitcher on the painters team I think is one who brings up the eve is there and they're like somebody is like because Ed is pitching the older guy and he's like he's he's got to go to his knees is he's got to go to his knees thing and then one guy Bobby's like this is why I'm never gonna have any that's a great line it's crazy uh yeah that's really good the way that guy Bobby just like has thoughts and like it'll like say half a thought or something everybody's like all right thanks Bobby yeah but yeah the other pitcher the he's like a younger guy's got mustache and somebody brings up like yeah you have that like weird pitching and he goes into the whole efist thing yeah and Tim and the guy who's riding the bench the entire time you lose track of until after it's dark out and they put him in for like the last inning of the game yep yeah um yeah do we even get to see that guy throw the efist pitch no I don't think so it's another one of these like subversion of tropes or whatever but he the this guy goes like goes on this like very extended sort of speech about the efist pitch and all this and like when we do see it it is not played up as like uh anything right you know when space man does it it's just like okay and then he's like and the thing about it is you can't throw it like you can't keep throwing it can't throw three in a row can't throw three in a row because they catch on or something but yeah it's not played up it's like oh this is the thing that's gonna like save the day or anything like that yeah it just happens but like everything else in this movie it's like I know we did it it's just there's no music to play along to it you know I also I like that guy because he's like taking it seriously in a way that's like not in the same rhythm as everybody else you know like he's got like this kind of self-serious complex in the way he's talking about everything and even when you seem like pitching and warming up you're like this guy's really taking this quite seriously and he's not particularly he's not made out to be like particularly good or anything right um I really like that I love when he's like explaining the efist and he has to stop mid sentence because someone hits he's like double if he can like it out yeah right which is such a funny thing to say too because then we do cut to the field and we see it's someone like barely getting to first right yeah oh man good movie yeah that's yeah but that is just like again the way I don't know I played a few games like I walked on with like a man like a proper mentally game um and they that's like how they talk about this it's like they talk as though they're as good as they want to be yeah right and it's like it's fun it's just I mean like all of this stuff is just sort of like it's you know it's a kid's fantasy exactly yeah it's the same thing as like you know a bunch of dads getting together to play like garage you know music in a garage or something it's like we're not rock stars we'll never be rock stars whatever but it's fun to play isn't it yeah and there's you know there's a lot to that I mean like honestly that's most of us you know 99.999% are not not going to reach any sort of glory right the way that like major league athletes or rock stars etc whatever like but like it's it becomes this thing of like this kid's dream that you have and you're like I just want to do it you know at a certain point you're like well I know I'm not going to be the best at it or famous or any of that but I'm like I can still do it exactly yeah nobody's like nobody's stopping me furthermore I get to wear a uniform uniform uniform uniform I someone I someone I play with someone on my team like when I asked her to join was like yeah like I love the aspect of this because like my whole pitch was like we want to like you know play harder practice hard or whatever yeah she was like yeah I see no reason we shouldn't be like cosplaying MLB yes at all times it's like I agree yeah we should be talking about pitch shapes and tumbling and like we should all be dipping yeah right we we keep this is my favorite thing about we have detailed stats okay like I can tell you my I can tell you my like walks per 9 innings like all like we have like a squirky thing out that we use like honestly it's all this like I guess you could do you could get as involved or as in the weeds as you want to be about any stuff but but if you're going for it fucking go for it and it's so funny hearing like someone I might be like well you know they say after 30 innings your your whip sort of normalized your your stats for you know like your walks hits innings pitch normalized it's like yeah they say that about professional baseball players I don't think anything's normalizing here sometimes we have I don't know 15 people in the lineup right yeah yeah but yeah it's just like yeah you it's I think it is it's just like a little pocket universe you you get to carve out and yeah I don't know the thought of having to just like stop doing it yeah it sounds terrible how can you not get romantic about baseball get romantic about baseball that's again that's what this movie is it's not these people are not being like super romantic about it a lot of it is just like it feels like they're just playing the game right but at the same time like this is yeah and the length yeah the game is the point the game is the point the way they like I mean yeah so the sun goes down completely nighttime yes and they all line their cars up along the you know the foul lines right to shine their headlights on the field to create some like sort of streaky light to play by all the infielders have to put sunglasses on because the headlights are like right at eye level yes which is just like it's like when an animal has to like know it's like off to get out of the trap it's like I must survive like I must keep going yeah you know yeah um yeah one guy one guy just leaves at this point that's the guy who's on like a diet right oh is that who was okay he's kind of like he's really losing patience he's like it's fucking stupid and I mean that gets into the whole like like why are you doing this for him it feels like if it's not serious enough it's not worth it yeah right he and everybody's like he's on a diet and then at one point he's up a bat and they're just saying food yeah just different kinds of food like meatballs gabagool which like I saw that I remember seeing that like in the trailer I was like I get it I get it and then seeing in a context it's like yeah I'm in that's good the umpire too is just like gentlemen yes all right all right yeah um yeah a couple like like fun moments like that where there's a moment to where the guy's like he's talking about how he's gonna steal the base or whatever and then he just he's on I think third and he's already gonna steal home and uh because there's no third base coach right I'll be my own third base coach right and he starts going into he's playing both characters and then he gets just like tagged out yeah yeah there's a thing too with the captain of the the river dogs where he's coaching third base yeah and everyone keeps getting mad at him because he's telling guys to hold hold yeah um it's like what the fuck are we stopping for right and it is just sort of like denial I guess right that this isn't the last game yeah right it's like yeah fucking run yeah last game see what you can do right yeah um everybody's out of shape like we said yeah one guy I love it he's late in the movie he's talking about how his knees are on fire he's like they're burning I could cook a rack of ribs on my knees right now yeah he's been catching the whole game yeah yeah and he's like uh he's because I'm like cute little language like but uh it's worth it every pain every meal everything yeah yeah yeah so true bestie so true um yeah what else uh they they go on to play uh in the dark the dark stuff goes on I think maybe a little too long where it's just like everybody's kind of like where's the ball right like there's a lot of that and maybe that's kind of the point is that like oh they're like you know they should have quit two hours ago yeah and now here we are and they're playing in the dark and they're like you know they can't even see the ball they're everything is just like you know yeah what are we gonna fucking like play like nobody can see anything yes so how are we supposed to call like an actual game here or whatever I do kind of I think there is a bit of a point to it where it's like when you get to like especially as a as an out-of-shape person you get to like the seventh or eighth inning yeah like jesus fucking christ i have to keep doing this yeah there's like a real fatigue that's that's in and like a why am i here yeah but also you can't leave right you're not gonna leave right you're not gonna leave yeah um but yeah it does it does as like from a movie from just like a entertainment perspective i do feel like it could they could trim a little off that yeah that's fine but yeah i don't know i guess that's the point is it's just like they never they truly never want to stop doing this they never want to stop um the as an addlers paint team they end up winning in the most anti-climactic fashion in an anti-climactic fashion yeah um the guys don't even like right they walk it they do walk it off they literally walk it off i guess um yeah guy base is loaded pit batter is walked run around third gets a walk in and no one like swarms him they're not like yeah no they just kind of walk up no good game good game yeah the the river dogs they kind of someone were just like sitting yeah the pictures just like the picture and like patcher both just like sitting across from each other yeah sort of like living in this moment of defeat yep this final moment of defeat that's it and that is the like someone else that went and someone else that like you knew this going into it you know it could be you and you just do it it's like that's the last name we're gonna play on this field yeah there's something about watching them just like empty the coolers that really bummed me out yeah we're just like i don't know feels that you do just like yeah you show up you set up then you just got to dismantle it and go on your sort of like uh sort of like that Bob Seager song about being on the road again you're a ghoul that or isn't it was a Jackson Brown that song about like roadies specifically he's like a love letter to roadies oh i don't know there's some song about setting up breaking down but yeah it's that same sort of feeling where it's just like yeah you guys been here so long all your ice melted in october yeah it yeah and it does feel like they've been there forever which is a point yeah and it's very effective i think yeah absolutely but yeah they do like the fireworks off it's it comes and goes it's a lackluster totally lackluster yeah um and then everybody just kind of like i just leave yeah sort of you know just while you leave and they'll never see each other again probably not which is another interesting thing that happens like kind of right it's not like it's that like cliche like big thought of like uh one day you rode your bike and it was the last time you would ever ride your bike yeah yeah like you sat on your mom's lap you sucked your mom's takes for sustenance and then it was solid food but that sort of thing you sucked your mom's tits for sustenance and that and that's okay let's be adults about this right but then later on you were he was doing it for oh dear oh dear oh no oh boy oh yeah um but yeah that sort of thing of like well one day it was again you may not have even known it yeah you realize of course this time you do right but it's hanging over the whole thing yeah it's what i don't know you like you work jobs and stuff with people and you're like i'm around these people more than my own family yeah and you see them every fucking day yeah and then like one day you're not there or they're not there and you just like never see them again you know and it's just like that's kind of a weird part of life that like i don't know if that's you know i'm sure some people stay in touch but i don't stay in touch i don't think i don't have a couple people couple people that's it couple people over how many years of working exactly like out of like the hundreds of people that you've worked with probably yeah yep yeah and this is like they chose this too yeah that element of it it's like they chose the game not the people yes they're like like so these guys like specifically don't like each other yeah the one guy the beer guy who was talking about combat doesn't like the capping guy right like they're at odds with each other yep and just like well then you got like the captain you took the river dogs right yeah um captain of the river dogs going to the like the community college pitcher who blows the game yeah and he's like well if you ever need a job let me know yeah like this is the most we know about this guy and like it's funny you can like see it on him that he's like probably like he has like an architecture firm or something like a local yeah yeah like well it's weird the way you can just tell he's well off there's something like soft about him you're right there is something like more put together about him than like the other guys on the team i think part of it is his like totally contiguous uniform that's not like like i love the guy who shows up late who like they very early on they almost have to forfeit the game because they have a players and they're waiting on their catcher yeah it's so stressful yes yeah i was gonna say i did have like a yeah a mini like we played a week or two ago and the game started like three in the afternoon and a bunch of people were like how the fuck is anybody late for three in the afternoon yeah he's really got me right but um yeah he's wearing like big frickin like jenko style you know he's wearing like 90s skateboard pants yeah he's like he drives up he's like what'd you guys start without me and they're like asshole you're up and now he's like oh okay and he goes he runs up gets up to plate grabs a bat whatever hits it and then trips and falls right yeah he really trips and falls so good really like letting you know the tone of this movie yeah but i love that yeah we talk about like the mismatch uniforms it's not just like the shirts being mismatched or whatever it's like people are just wearing like whatever yeah um that is funny that yeah the guy does seem more put together yes and this is like this is a thing with like men's leagues especially the guys who start these teams are always like not that good and really into it of course yeah um yeah well that guy seems nice enough but everyone seems very sick of his shit oh no of course any he even he says i want he's like i started this fucking team and then one guy's like okay yeah right what is it yeah to say that now as like yeah as it's the last day it never meant anything it especially doesn't mean anything now yeah um and that the movie ends uh with Franny walking away um there's a immemorium for Franny or in memory because i guess the guy play Franny died you know um and then uh we hear the tom weight song old 55 then we've talked about tom weights yeah are you on board with old 55 so i actually didn't hear it because the fireworks that we're playing over the ending were freaking my dog out so i had to mute it really yeah where their fireworks play i know like i think i just like had it oh okay or something i didn't hear old 55 okay i don't think but i bet it was very upper pau should we play here on the show i mean we can get uh it's um it's early tom weights it's before all of where he cut the top most of the way off his top hat but not all the way not all the way yeah before he uh rode the rails rode the rails really before he um started just eating old tin cans the uh he has a billy goat he's putting the he's putting the gruff in billy goats gruff you know what i'm saying i like uh what's the album what's like the big one with rain in the title rain dogs that's a great album i love rain dogs yeah i'm too i love all the time weights news about i'm uh i like all of the dumb uh ride in the rails bullshit you know i uh i'm into it i have a lot of growing up to do i think i it's kind of you know it's a commitment to a bit of course it's a bit sure right of course it's a bit everybody's doing a bit but everybody's doing a bit you know this happens to be for sale at spear halloween sure hobo one of the oldest costumes you could buy or make you know it's like bob dylan same thing he was pretending to be riding the rails exactly yeah he doesn't ride the fucking rails just a nice middle class board from in the soda yeah it's just a nice Jewish boy please um tom wins here kind of like it just a solemn sort of oh i did hear this i'm realizing oh did it just meant nothing yeah that doesn't i didn't register this as tom wins even well i i mean i know the song so i i was just yeah i was just yeah i was feeling it though it's like it feels so earned yeah right because the movie does not give you the emotionality of that song at any point no and it doesn't even be like there's not even like a winking lack of emotionality it is just doing its thing yes guys being dudes just kind of sound therapy and dudes i know i yeah the like there's no other real there there's like music in the movie but it's like score kind of stuff and it's not like it's it's like very subtle very downplayed like and kind of like tones and drones tones and drones um no cones no cones no cones but uh yeah i feel like this song all of like so much of tom wins music is just about like being yeah it's like riding the rail stuff but the the stuff on my luck yeah it's all down my luck it's all like regrets it's all it's a lot of this stuff how did i get here yeah so much well on back at the bottom of the bottle so you know that kind of shit and like i don't know this song is it just feels it just all feels appropriate for the moment in the movie where it's just like yeah this is just kind of the end of like this thing for these guys yep and that's always really addressing how like kind of sad it is yeah but everybody's kind of feeling it as they drive off totally you know a couple of those guys are going to shed a tear in their car all the way home so it's like there's no good it's like for some guys they're just like done yeah they'll get old immediately after this yeah other guys are young and they'll live whole lives that have nothing to do with this and they'll put that kind of distance between themselves and this part of their life yeah like this like this doesn't mean that much to them and that's why the captain of the river dog is like trying to hang on to this case like let me know if you need a job yes we'd love to see uh yeah talk about this very day talk about this day forever forever would you like to talk about it before you know yeah i really liked it yeah i i think i i like it more than we talked about it yeah it is it is very spare it's very spare but i'm not against that necessarily i'm not either i think i was also a little less high on it i think before we start talking i think even like yeah sorry i was just i think being able to like articulate the sort of subtext of yeah of these moments was was uh they just like bump me up a half a star there we go um yeah i think because so much of the uh movies that we've watched for the series too they are these like there's a lot of stakes involved and it's like right we're you know even trying to make it to the pros yeah even like right something like that which is like the show to the show but like even that where it's like it's not so much about the game it's about the other people above even that has like stakes to it will you know crash and um students around and end up together yeah and all this whatever right or like money ball like will they money ball it will Brad Pitt finish his twinkie yeah yeah um and then yeah like this says much lower just in general lower stakes but uh yeah same same thing same like uh you know romantic kind of baseball thing just i don't know it's easy to get like maybe like not be not as impressed with this necessarily after watching like other baseball movies that have like bigger stakes and then you watch this and it's like seems very small but that's kind that's the point here's you're gonna like this okay i'm saying that so you're calling your shot like the great damn beer i am i'm pointing pointing out to the right field and i'm saying that movies like bull Durham are like uh the original trilogy and this is Andor oh okay i like this i do like right where it's like the most baseball movies are about somebody destined for greatness yeah and this is about the other people this is about the other people that just keep it keep it alive yeah don't yeah yeah i i think what if he sacrificed everything my fireworks yeah yeah i just think yeah i think there's like something so you know right it's the is that line for money ball where it's like we all play the child's game until one day we can't and like that means something when it's your job but in something way more kind of when it's not yeah totally yeah like because when you're when you retire from baseball you go play amateur baseball right sure you have the body of a professional athlete and just because you're throwing 89 in the fucking majors and you're getting shell doesn't mean you can't like show up to or mentally game and sit everybody down right so these are just people truly getting like some sort of managerial position right there are ways to stay in it and this is like these are guys who are never in it they were never in it they were never even close but they just love the child's game yeah it's pure maybe not to be too precious about it and it's like there's nowhere to play right like they can't right unless they go two times over but they're not gonna so fucking far so far yeah yeah there you know it's maybe they're full of shit maybe they go do it maybe well that's the other thing too is that like how i thought that i had after this movie it was like how long can like i know some of these guys are definitely done but like some of them one of the younger guys are the younger guys definitely want to keep playing right it's like you're telling me the guys who lined up their cars right for just like a shred of light to get fireworks number as far as none of them are gonna continue stopping at nothing right come on continue stopping it not yeah but i don't know the story of this field is like if that is sad it's a reverse field of dreams it is yeah field of screams oh no that's probably a yeah lower polymer scream and the show just like yours it the worst thing i can possibly imagine is that moment is that what year is it as the worst oh it honestly gives me chills it bums me out the best no and so effective so but hey this is also kind of what year is it yeah it's same thing what year is it yeah 1994 something something i don't know do you like the triangular manholes i thought that was a fun little detail yeah the triangular manholes uh pizza truck driving over it sure you know triangular manholes being this moment where someone's explaining that the town had originally manhole covers were triangular and the city's slowly replacing them but there still are some and next to soldiers field is one yes we see the pizza truck drive over yeah it's just another thing that's changing yeah it's yeah it's your town changes i mean it's the thing that sucks about you know time is that like it just goes on right you're like i don't want it to i like that example specifically because it's totally value neutral yeah it has nothing there's no clear structural advantage to a triangular manhole over a circular one totally it and you're just like but you're still like but it is also kind of pointless then where you're like well why would you bother right well i'm changing yeah yeah they say yeah no they don't but that just it feels like it feels like change in general yeah how like uh yeah you're right like it does feel like sort of neutral and then like oh there's no advantage to it being circular or triangular it seems like um maybe they they've just reached some sort of standard now where they buy only round holes so they you know covers so they have to make them all round whatever but it just it feels like the just in general change but that thing of being like yeah when i was a kid we had like triangular manhole covers you know and just like where did those go like what happened like why did we switch to the roundones or like and yeah and the horrifying truth is like we just did we just it right it's pointless it's kind of it's the same as like we're getting rid of a baseball field to put up a school where it's like well that's not bad right that's not a bad thing it's that's you know it's not even i don't know it is it just feels like the change of it all it feels like yeah this was a thing that i don't know like you you have like a weird connection to and nostalgia for that is just being like changed for seemingly no reason yeah and then like you get older and you're like yeah i don't know why i kind of feel bad that we have round-demand hole covers and not triangular ones but i do i don't know yeah i don't know why i feel bad that we have a school instead of a baseball field yeah i don't definitely do but i definitely do i don't know why it does kind of because you're like you could put a school up anywhere you could have made the manhole covers any shape you could have other people could have done triangles why do we have to give up our thing the sure for their thing of course and this you know this is progress this has changed whatever else but it is like it it's a thing like you can never go home again right where you're just like oh man this is not the same place this is not the town that i grew up in this is just it just feels like a different fucking world yeah and like that moment where uh isn't it yeah yeah yeah yeah community or whatever um that same moment where he's like oh yeah they're gonna put a fucking art class up here it's like you're mad about art like the thing you're mad about is like other people are gonna be living lives here that have nothing to do with what you're doing yes and it's like it's like it's funny on display but it's also just like very human like everyone has to wreck it with stuff like that right the fact that like that's the other thing too that i liked about it was that they're not it's not like oh yeah we're tearing down this baseball diamond so we can build a shopping mall right it's not like yeah they're tearing down the ski resort to yeah or like oh they're just putting condos yeah or something like that it's like oh it's like a net good for the community hundred percent like ultimately it is better to have a school than like a baseball diamond that is like only used sometimes or whatever by well guy yeah yeah frankly yes by you guys and like the one dad who shows up with his son to like uh he's like the way i've lived versions of that i yeah there's like there's a moment where they're playing and a father and a son pull up and they're like hey you guys this park is supposed to be empty here and they're like well we're playing and he's like they're gonna be dancing he's like we're in the fourth inning he's like so what we i can't use them for diamond and they're like no like that's it and then they guys walk on and there is something like yeah there's something inherently silly about telling a kid you can't take his rap right a kid who theoretically could go to the highest level right like it hasn't not happened yeah and they're just like fuck off kid yeah i mean like it's so real it's so real every yeah there's something like i have waited i've sat on the bench the dugout bench and waited for a father's uncle for a team of like little years to wrap it up yeah so that i can go play right and you're like cut your pissed you're like looking at your wide you know it's a little annoying it's like really it's seven forty already you guys should have been out of here ten minutes again yeah yeah it's like that's who this is here for and yeah but it's it's there for everybody it is it is it feels it feels silly to be like i'm a grown adult and you i'm bigger than you yeah you were supposed to be done ten minutes ago and i know you can you don't have like a solid handle on time just and like appointments and keeping them and whatnot but this is important to me right you're like you're not flipping out but like there's only like one or two shoelaces away from flipping right yeah and i do think that also gets to the heart of like what makes this so special for these guys is like this yeah this is like that one space where they can like connect with their whole lives basically right like you play you start playing when you're young sure in most cases and then like you just you keep at it yeah i mean like in theory these guys like probably played when they were kids on this diamond yeah right a lot of them i'm assuming it's like similar to my experience of like you play until high school maybe sure and then you drop it for 10 plus years whatever yeah and you find you're like oh what the hell else i know sure i want to play again yeah this was a thing that brought me joy i'm gonna do it again and then you're like in touch with like this version of yourself that hasn't been like crushed into a fine powder yes yeah yeah so fuck off kid yeah so fuck off fuck off yeah yeah the thing about like these guys probably having played there when they were kids too and then like they're still hanging on to like just a part of themselves on them on in the game and then that's being like you know they're putting a school there like i gotta understand being like salty about that totally and then like yeah again it's in that positive but ultimately it's just kind of like well you can't build a school down the street or whatever like it has to be right here yeah in the thing that i love but like the unfortunate thing about baseball field is there big open spaces there's not a golf course that we can occupy please in my opinion tear truly just like tear down every golf every golf course no tear them down tear them down somehow yeah take garden shares and just like snip the flags you find just got on me yeah no it's fine friggin sous over here a bit of a lush yeah Danny splashing around in his booze the mic might have picked it up i hope so i'm gonna like splashing um yeah okay we're gonna that's fine um yeah i don't uh i think we could kind of talk about this forever much in the way that you talk about life forever yeah essentially the movie is about all of these the ball going on but not coming down is so funny it's like it's like the it's almost supernatural obviously it just like goes out of sight somewhere yeah but it doesn't really because like as far as anyone can tell it didn't land anywhere yeah again it feels like one of those things that they'll talk about when they see each other next or or when they're older or whatever and be like yeah so you had a pop flying the ball just never came back down which is sort of the dream of this whole game of course it's like the thefus it just hangs out there forever it's that uh said video clip of uh all every like tom petty and prince and everybody playing while my guitar gently weeps and prince throws the guitar if prince throws his guitar up in the air and we never see it coming down and just like the man's prince he just he just ripped a solo that just fucking put everybody else to shame and and he throws guitar up in the air and then you know the angels catch it because they were like this will be worse off the guitar prince i was getting bored not noodling up here and it's only been a few days there were that's George we've got a hell of a band up here oh they got help me jannus jimmy chubby checker uh or wait he's still alive isn't he chubby no way that's domino just all the the heavy sack guys um the big bulb uh uh lot ass steward holy shit chubby chubby is still alive he's still alive he's still alive he's still alive the man cannot he it's got to be boned on bone though his back you really hear the twisting yeah it's got no fucking cartilage between those rounds anymore 83 i would have thought he was 120 right yeah well the important thing to remember is that he ripped off fat domino uh with the twist with his whole deal that's why his name is chubby checker it's like a play on fat domino i like how the twist and let's twist again in my mind just constantly conflated anytime like i'm like which i don't know which version this is and then he had like whatever a million of them yeah he's like he's like a bobby bores picket yeah yeah this is the memorial day twist baby let's twist again like we did in nom like we did last memorial day oh my god um bobby bores picket and bobby bores picket's another so funny that he was like i guess people like songs about monster okay what other what other situations could we find the the mummy in the wolf man and his son and his son what if they went hawaiian yeah they went monster surf they went monster is it surfer swim or the monster swim monster yeah less exciting they i mean i know you have to watch like videos of him performing these songs live with the faces he makes the faces like it's all you know um like lip syncs you know right of course yeah but like right so part of that is him showing up in a suit it's like it's crazy also that he didn't just like go full like i'm gonna wear a Dracula outfit you know just like he's a songwriter he's a clown yeah exactly and he wears like a suit and he's like oh yes here i am i'm gonna sing uh the monster swim and then wiggling is like yeah he's making this making e-gore faces he immediately slips into e-gore and it wasn't bad you ever hear his monster rap i have heard his mom is it just a monster match with like a bp and he's like i was working in the lab link one night yeah i think that's probably pretty close so we will bobby's up too you got to imagine there's some wordplay with like how mummies are wrapped up in gauze and he's doing something with that yeah yeah it went i don't want to wear it's okay i don't want to best laugh you by my foot best hat to the imagination um all right any box stock arms let's just let it box a song bitch where you can find out what we think of a movie just before the episode comes out but not in any particular detail uh pardon cool so when i read this on my account yep i think i gave it three and a half you gave it three and a half i gave it three wow this is interesting usually i know if you're listening you're like why is this interesting well if you're listening if you've been listening for a long time yeah you've probably just crashed your car you lost control lost control of your car right yeah the tables have turned here ever so by by a man five degrees the tables have turned this what what usually happens i am one half star hot around in a movie then dan is where is i am one half star cooler than raw yeah and oh oh how the tables have turned like there's some huge schism here i know i know we've very full already we've fully tried places yeah i would give it a four at this point i i think i i think it's i've had enough time to just like kind of let it wash over me and again talking about it i think it's been really really good yeah i i would probably give this a three and a half now but i i'll put four and like because i think we either way i think we both like this movie i think so you don't like this well i'm trying to think if i if i can just honor three and a half no i'm not asking you to i know i know i'm just i'm bargain i'm negotiating against myself i know uh this uh not gonna not gonna um i'm gonna smash that like one you gotta smash that like button this is a big like this is when i would say it's someone down make the mod and for a long time i'd heard good things about this except for one per so for initially someone gave this like a one star on letterbox i was like yo what happened right he was like i didn't like it and then there's like a someone page knows through like work directly like friend of a friend kind of thing okay and then i asked her friend about this who the mutual friend i was like what is his problem when he's like is it really that bad and she's like no it's not bad he's just in his 20s it's really good oh i mean i really feel like that makes a lot of sense that makes a hell of a lot of sense yeah right he's just in his 20s get back to me in 10 years yeah you do have to sort of take your take your lumps that that's not you know i'm 42 now right and i work with people who are in their 20s and they say declarative things harsh hard statements and stances i'm like okay and they don't they don't even have a podcast they don't know where you're supposed to do exactly but it it uh what's that uh that's seen in good while hunting right where he's like she fought in yeah she's dead no what was she fought in a cell type of thing i was i gotta go see my therapist because it's like far that was insane no uh it's like early on when they run Williams and uh met Damon first like kind of meet each other yeah and met Damon is like oh fucking like he's you know i know everything kind of attitude and then the next time he's like you see some Robin Williams is like yeah you know uh i was thinking i couldn't stop thinking about everything that you were saying and then i realized something and i fell into a deep sleep and it's like you're just a kid you know you don't know like you have an experience you could recite these things from books or whatever you haven't lived any sort of experiences and that's what it's like dealing with kids and they're like one star and you're like you don't know anything you don't know anything you know shit about it you know it's like wait till your knee hurts that's what i was just gonna say like wait till both your knees are on fire you cook a rack of ribs on them like you know shit about anything yeah and you still want a fucking plight yeah that's you know anyway i can't wait i can't wait i can't i prey on the downfall of these 20 year olds oh i mean what you know it happens to all of us right but it is that thing of like you know you're young and you're like i'm never gonna die um you know nothing can hurt me all this stuff and you're just like okay well all right i'll see you in like 20 yeah talk to me talk to me i'll save you i'll save you a seat at the sad bar that's it i'll see you when you're like playing in a men's league or whatever the thing is then you know whatever you say though my guy good for you good for you all right um that's it that has been our baseball series again if you head on over to patreon.com slash kingry pod and you sign up for that five dollar a month tier you get one extra inning you get an extra inning we're going extra in it's an extra I like that um that they settled the all-star game with a home run hitting contest is that it was tied after nine innings so they were like we're just gonna hit dingers whoever hits the most anger wins that's that's fun that's fun yeah it was a great time yeah um yeah patreon.com sign up and this friday we're gonna be talking bad news bears 1976 Walter math al and some tatom is in it and some other kids there gonna be paper moon but moon shots these these kids they're gonna be foul-mouthed they're gonna say some stuff they're gonna say the n-word they're kind of like zoomers in that way they're kind of like zoomers or gen alpha or whatever the fuck they're calling themselves until then until then uh until then uh and then next week oh sure sure um we're starting our western series are sort of uh our neo-westerns yeah it's sort of neo-western they're not there's another term for right yeah they're like um i mean basically we're gonna be doing uh more modern westerns not i feel like neo-western makes it sound like we're gonna be doing like wild wild west well it's things that take place like in present day sure that are westes i see what you're saying we're gonna be doing first one up is western revisionism isn't that what they call it yeah that's probably closer closer what we're doing uh so yeah i'm forgiven next Tuesday talking clint we're also probably probably gonna talk about that yeah i actually i think it's called unforgivable you ever see that youtube video where it's just like a guy telling a story about how you want to waffle fries no i'll sell something all right it's like early youtube but it's very funny all right i like we'll talk about them we'll talk about that's the bonus i'm forgiving to fucking great movie though i've never seen it and i hear only good things yeah it's um i'm interested to see because you're not like a western guy not yet but i just watched the western of baseball movies so you did so i think i'm primed for it yeah prime for like i want to just go slow things yeah guy sort of crawling to the grave kind of yeah let's do it yeah all right that's it guys thanks for listening and uh yeah for last time we're out
