“EF Polymer”: An Absorbent Polymer Made from Orange Peels, and a Father’s Back

In this episode, I reflect on a startup called EF Polymer, which has developed a fully organic absorbent polymer made from fruit waste such as orange peels.At first glance, an “absorbent polymer” doesn’t sound especially remarkable. But when you look at how it works—absorbing water in soil, slowly releasing it to plant roots, and eventually returning to the earth—it begins to suggest a practical way of addressing water use in agriculture.Beyond the technology itself, what stayed with me was the story behind it. The founder was inspired by watching his father, a farmer, struggle with water shortages, and began experimenting with kitchen waste in an attempt to help him. That personal motivation eventually grew into a solution now being discussed on a global scale.Rather than offering dramatic promises, this episode is a quiet look at how small, grounded ideas—focused on making better use of what already exists—can sometimes lead to meaningful change.
