40 Years of Game Dev & Why AI Empowers Indie Creators | ft. Matt Scibilia Welcome back to Everything's Fine We're Shipping on Time! This week, Gary Gettys and Ric Neil sit down with video game industry legend Matt Scibilia. With over 40 years of experience shaping titles at MicroProse, Origin Systems, and Critical Mass Interactive, Matt has literally been here since the industry started (when games only had three colors!). We dive deep into the early days of game development, what it takes to survive massive studio layoffs, and why he’s more excited than ever about the current indie renaissance. Matt also shares his unfiltered thoughts on how small teams can use AI tools to punch above their weight class and build authentic, community-driven worlds. What We Cover: 02:26 – AI in Production: Why game developers have always used AI. 09:26 – The "Before Origin" Era: MicroProse, 3-color games, and industry origin stories. 15:00 – Surviving acquisitions, studio layoffs, and adapting to chaos. 27:40 – Pioneering outsource development with Critical Mass Interactive. 41:34 – The Indie Renaissance: Why small, AI-empowered teams are the future. 47:57 – Building authentic communities instead of chasing traditional funding. 1:04:28 – The spiritual center of game design: Building worlds, not just products.
