From Dostana to Ek Ladki Ko Dekha, we’ve seen such minimal exposure to LGBTQ+ identities in South Asian media, but why don’t we hear more about the hijra community in South Asia? Or Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore’s prominent portrayal of homosexual and transsexual identities in his work? This week, we spoke to Chitra Jagannathan about bisexuality and bi-erasure, colonialism’s impact on homophobia in South Asia, and speaking out as a South Asian-American member of the LGBTQ+ community.
