Poeta, novelista, cineasta, dramaturgo y ensayista italiano nacido en Bolonia en 1922.
Hijo de un militar fascista y una madre profundamente católica,
sus ideas siempre fueron de izquierda, llegando incluso a unirse por algún tiempo al partido comunista. A los diecisiete años se matriculó en la Universidad de Bolonia para estudiar Filosofía y Letras, y cinco años después publicó el primer libro de poemas.
Fue además un gran guionista y director de cine. Sus escritos sobre crítica social alcanzaron gran brillo con uno de sus últimos trabajos, "Cartas luteranas", en las que analizó la situación decadente de la sociedad italiana.
