The work is a collection of stories of didactic character that all have the same structure: young Count Lucanor asks Patronio, his counselor, for advice about something he knows or is concerned about, related to the government of his lands. To explain his advice, Patronio tells a story as an example. All the stories end with a few verses that summarize the teaching of Patronius: the moral. These stories are not original, they are based on popular stories already known in many countries, but Don Juan Manuel writes them in a very personal way. The purpose of this book is to be a manual for the education of the nobles. Para explicar su consejo, Patronio le cuenta un cuento como ejemplo. Todos los cuentos acaban con unos versos que resumen la enseñanza de Patronio: la moraleja. Estos cuentos no son originales, están basados en relatos populares ya conocidos en muchos países, pero don Juan Manuel los escribe de una forma muy personal.
