Los judíos expulsados en 1492 mediante el Edicto de Granada se llevaron su español al exilio. Podemos decir que aún hoy se habla el español del siglo XV, pues el judeoespañol conserva muchos rasgos perdidos en el español general. La «Gramática castellana» fue publicada por Elio Antonio de Nebrija en 1492. Fue la primera gramática de una lengua romance, de gran importancia para la difusión del español en el incipiente imperio.
