Las compañías tabacaleras han logrado asociar el glamur, el placer, el sexo, el riesgo y la moda con el consumo de tabaco, al principio solo era de unas élites, pero después se difundió entre toda la población. Para llegar a las mujeres, a quienes les estaba prohibido, se encargó una campaña de publicidad a Edward Bernays, para presentarlo como un acto de liberación. En los años 50 había estudios que lo relacionaban con cáncer de pulmón y las ventas bajaron. La industria respondió con el compromiso de realizar sus propias investigaciones, que nunca terminaban por falta de pruebas. A los 10 años se informó más claramente sobre el peligro del tabaco. La respuesta fue añadir amoniaco para aumentar el efecto adictivo de la nicotina. Cuando se prohibió la publicidad se buscó la publicidad indirecta y dirigida hacia los niños.
