Mucho antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, de hecho durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, Alemania inició la primera campaña de bombardeo estratégico del mundo. En un intento de desmoralizar al pueblo de Gran Bretaña, a principios de 1915, un dirigible zepelín alemán arrojó bombas sobre la ciudad de Great Yarmouth, en Norfolk.
