Elections in Africa

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

This year is a big one for elections on the African continent. 2017 has already seen The Gambia removing Yahyah Jammeh who has been president for more twenty years, mainly due to the strong regional support; however other countries are due to hold elections. A country, like Angola, with long-sitting presidents Eduardo Dos Santos will be holding elections and there has already been criticism on the political and social conditions before the elections. Kenya is another country which will hold elections in a few weeks and already international watchdogs have criticised the treatment of journalists and an open media environment in the country. To assist us to look at the topic we are joined by: • Mr Miguel de Brito , the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy; Country Director Mozambique • • Ongama Mtimka, lecturer in political studies at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, • • Prof Shadrack Gutto, Constitutional law expert and political analyst with the University of South Africa
