Elena Ceausescu moglie di Nicolae Ceausescu: a lei si deve una delle più devastanti epidemie di AIDS che l'occidente abbia mai conosciuto. Quando, tra il 1987 e il 1988, emerse che migliaia di bambini ospitati negli orfanotrofi di stato erano stati infettati dal virus, Elena era a capo della commissione statale per la salute: proibì di effettuare gli esami del sangue, sostenendo che, essendo l'AIDS una malattia tipica dei “decadenti occidentali”, non fosse possibile la sua esistenza in Romania.
