Ellicott City’s Flood Defense Tunnel | Washington DC News
from Washington DC News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
Ten years after a devastating flood tore through Ellicott City, Maryland, residents are still fighting to prevent history from repeating — and this time, they’re building a giant tunnel to stop the water before it hits Main Street. The North Tunnel Project, currently under construction, is designed to channel 26,000 gallons of water per second into the Patapsco River, boring through granite to protect the historic district. Since the 2016 flood killed two people and destroyed buildings, the county has also upgraded its alert system, mapped new evacuation routes, and built three of five retention ponds upstream. The tragic death of Edison Hermond in 2018 during a rescue attempt underscores why these measures matter — and the tunnel is now on track to finish by late 2027.
