Rosh Chodesh Elul, the New Year of the animals - we paid extra special attention to our pets, but what about the animals that we eat? When we think of the Bible, we think of sacrifices- ancient Israel was a really bloody place, but if we look back earlier, we see a different version. There are two points of view that have coexisted within the Jewish tradition down through the centuries: eating meat, and being a vegan.
