Embrace the Journey to Happiness

from The Daily Grateful with Michael Crose · host Michael Crose

Forget chasing rainbows – true happiness lies in appreciating the everyday sunshine. This episode dives into the counterintuitive concept that happiness isn't a lofty goal, but a journey paved with small choices and mindful moments. We'll explore why ditching the pressure of "finding" happiness unlocks its potential instead. Oh and here is the link to the Feelings Wheel I spoke of on Friday https://cdn.gottman.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/The-Gottman-Institute_The-Feeling-Wheel.pdf

TRANSCRIPT · AUTO-GENERATED

Do you want to meet me in person? It's possible. At the end of this month, I will be in Orlando at Podfest Expo. Check it out, podfestexpo.com.

On Thursday morning, I'll be running a two-hour thing called Petchekucia. And if you're not familiar with that, it's where you have 20 speakers who have five minutes to talk and 20 slides that they don't have control over. They're just automatically done. And you will learn so much and it'll be so good.

So if you're interested in going, go right now to podfestexpo.com and check it out. I know what you want. I actually know what you're looking for. It's what we're all looking for.

We want to be happy. You know? Happy, happy, happy. I want to be happy.

But you know, happy comes with a bunch of complications. You know, because you got to do this to do this to be happy? Do you? Or can you just be happy?

Here's the thing I've learned in life. Happiness is not a destination. It's a daily adventure. You go out and you do things every day.

You know what I did today? I went out with my favorite XY, Diane, XY number two of three. And we just went out and had an adventure. And I went to tractor supply.

I tried to get her to buy me a tractor. She would not. Then she took me to lunch. And at lunch, when we were leaving, she got some candy for herself.

And then she said, I'm going to give you some candy. I don't want to candy. And she goes, you like M&Ms with penis. I'm going to give them for you.

I said, I wanted a tractor. She goes, these are tractor M&Ms. And I was happy. I was happy spending the day with her.

We had fun. You know what we call that? We call that a bebop. We went to tractor supply to buy horse bedding.

You're saying, Michael, do you have a horse? No, but I got cats. And I saw a TikTok video where they're using this for kitty litter. And it looks exciting.

And it was like 40 pounds of bed bag. It was heavy for $6 and something cheap. So let's find ways to do things to make you happy. Another thing you want to do is ditch the pressure and embrace the present.

How's that? Ditch the pressure. Embrace the present. Just learn how to be mindful with gratitude.

And when you do that, you unlock all kinds of things and happiness just pops out. We're not happy 24 hours a day. We're not going to be. Happy is little things.

You got to work at it. You got to go for it. And you got to say, what the hell? I'm going to be happy, dammit.

I'm going to be happy. And that's all you really have to do. Relationships there, happiness. They're like happiness, rock and fuel.

You know what I'm saying? And if you are connected with somebody and you got like, I have my son who's living here now with his girlfriend and I'm in a relationship with them, they're just, we're happy. We're having some little things going on. You know what you get used to.

I raised Zach. I mean, I raised him. When I divorced his mummy, Zach came with me. He was 12 years old, 11, 12 years old.

And there was never any question about it. He moved right in here with me and he stayed with me. He as an adult moved out. He's lived in an apartment with his girlfriend for seven years.

And it came time where they needed to make some changes in their life. So they moved in here. No questions. They moved in here.

And you know what, it's great. It makes me happy. It makes me happy. Now you want to know what else you can do to get happy?

It's something that I do and I need to do a lot more of. You got to move your body. You got to, you know, my friend Scott Smith who has the daily boost podcast. His website is MotivationToMove.com.

And you know, MotivationToMove.com. Check it out. And that's what he says. Everything happens when you move.

When you move, it releases endorphins. And endorphins make you giddy and you're happy. And the other thing you can do is you can smile a lot. When you smile, it releases endorphins.

And those chemicals go right to your brain and they make you happy, happy, happy. All right? So take tiny, tiny steps. Say you're miserable.

Just say, oh gosh, life sucks so bad. Well, yeah. Sometimes it does. As I mentioned in a podcast here a few days ago, good morning.

I know the sun's in your, I'm morning. I can't talk. I don't add it. Good morning.

I know it's hard to wake up because the sun's in your eyes and sometimes life kind of sucks. But you've got this. And hey, you never know. You heard me say before, there's a million different ways that the state could go.

So you take small steps and you work unhappiness. That's what you do. You take small steps and you work unhappiness. As you do this, as you move your body, as you work on your relationships, as you get rid of the pressure that's on you, and you realize that happiness is not a destination, it's a process.

It's a daily adventure. You realize all these things and life is going to go better. It's just plain outright going to go better. Oh, I want to mention when I was here before, you know, when I was here Friday, we talked about the emotions wheel.

And I talked a little bit about that. And I found a link to where you can go and look at it, download it, print it, do whatever you want. I'm encouraging you to do it. I'm going to show this to somebody today.

And I got to tell them, I need to put my reading glasses on here. You know, I said, how are you feeling? And she was like irritated. Okay, she was irritated.

And we let's grab the wheel right here. We're going to look at it because I grab the wheel and I'll get it. And we move the next step up to being irritated. Sometimes you can feel hateful.

That's a terrible way to do it. But when you get right down to the core, which is in the center, it says that you're mad. And sometimes you're mad. It's not being mad.

Anyway, if you look at the show notes in this, in this episode, there's a link to a PDF. It takes you to the PDF. They don't try and sell you anything. It's a direct link to the PDF and the PhD who created this wheel stuck it up on the interwebs.

So if it's there, it's there, download it. I got this from a friend who belongs to this professional organization and they paid a bunch of money to have this as part of what they're, you know, that was part of their program. You got it for free. I got it for free because I gave it to me and I looked it up on the interwebs and now you get it for free.

So that is a good thing. All right. Hope you're having a terrific day. I hope you come and see me at the end of the month at Podfest in Orlando.

I'll be, I'm going to be doing a couple of three things there. And the pet choches, the one that I would really invite you to. And afterwards we can wander around in hallway and chat and talk and hang out. So feel free to do that.

I'm also am seeing the beginner thing where there will be a bunch of speakers. I'm also running a panel discussion on all the things you need to do, all the mechanical things you need to do to produce a podcast, which I'm doing right now. I'm doing the mechanical things to produce a podcast because I'm talking into Mr. microphone.

We'll see you tomorrow, everybody.
