And so this is Wednesday. If you're listening to this, you're listening to a obviously pre-recorded show that I recorded Three days ago on Sunday because today is the day that a massive hurricane is supposed to come straight up our pudites And I've lived in Florida since 1964 and I've never had a hurricane come right into us Just never have I've seen them come right into Fort Myers Devastation like crazy. I've seen them come right down through Miami Devastation like crazy. I've seen them just you know we could go go right up into the Big Bend area, Florida Devastation like you would a lot of devastation here.

Never had one come and hit us. Hang on. So we'll see how this goes I'm just betting that today I don't have electricity. Thus I'm recording a bunch of these in advance.

They're short But anyway, anyway, yeah, I'm not editing either because time is not on my side. This all this is a daily great And today I Want to talk to you About 10 different things if I have time we'll see let's check my mood I really I you know, I write notes for these things and I rarely go off them I might take one or two talking points, but I just really but we're going to talk about hopefully 10 things To be grateful for as far as technology is concerned I am on the board of directors of the Tampa Bay Technology Center a club that Is I've been associated with one way or another since the 80s And it was like really cool back then and now it's still pretty cool Except the median age of our membership is death and trust me. I'm right up there with them But what are 10 good things that we should all be grateful for as far as technology is concerned Did I write these 10 things? No Technology wrote these 10 things for me.

We'll talk about that in a minute. But number one is improved communication Remember how we used to um, you know get a hold of other I remember in the 80s. I swear to god I would go to work. We had a lawn care business has control business.

I would go to work I'd leave my office and I'd go out. I knew where every damn phone booth was in panels county And I would go about my business of going and checking on yards That's just primarily what I did is I went checking on yards and and shrubs and all of that good type of stuff And I usually had 10 to 12 stops to make a day to go analyze and you know Just suit problems were and all I love that. Yeah, but the office couldn't get hold of me So what I would do is I would take my quarter and I knew like I say I knew where every phone booth was And once or twice a day, I would check in. I would go drop the quarter.

I'd call the office I said what's going on? Oh, you gotta call Bob. You gotta call this you gotta go And I'd write all this down on a little piece of paper and I say okay And I said cost me a quarter to call each one of these people. So I will prioritize.

Okay, this guy Yeah, I'm gonna call this guy. So I called it. You know, anyway, that's how I did it then technology came into the world And I got this little box that I wore a little tiny thing that I wore and then we go beep beep beep beep beep You know, and when it went beep beep beep beep I knew I had to call the office And since I knew where every phone booth was I would call the office then it got even better than that They got into this thing to where it had a little screen on it And at the office they could type me a message They would say mrs. Galickios orange tree is looking weird.

Could you swing by and look at it? And I would show up right on this little LED screen. That was cool as damn thing in the world. That was just so awesome And you know that was great, but so that just improved things and then all of a sudden Cell phones came out but understand cell phones came out while they were called car phones in those days And all but they cost like just a poop ton of money I mean more money than you could even imagine and then it was 55 cents a minute to talk on them So you had to talk real fast, but that changed everything forever Now the other thing is cool about technology number two I'm not gonna get all the way down this because we're four minutes then and uh, I'm trying to keep these things short this week Access to information this weird thing I remember having a computer in the 80s and there was something called bulletin boards They were local people that had these computers in their house set up to a phone line and you could dial in and you could get information There was a guy named wallie canan who was a retired weatherman for channel 10 And he had a bulletin board called wallie's weather And I would dial into wallie's weather in the morning for I left the house and wallie had a detailed weather report written on the computer I thought that was so damn cool.

Then of course The internet happened enough about that Enhanced convenience Technology supplies daily cat you know tasks from online shopping. I mean who would have thunk all right now? I remember in the 90s There was an interesting time in my life But uh, I had to buy Christmas presents for all of my kids And there was this thing called amazon.com that had was recently out there that they started off just selling books But then they were selling toys and I by the way, my internet was dial up I do dial up and I went to AOL as a matter of fact And then from there I would go on to their browser and type in amazon and I went in there And I did it from my laptop at my mom's house I was visiting mom and I did it right there because I didn't want to be ever in my house So I took my lap. Yeah, I had a laptop.

It was a 286 laptop You know not not a good laptop, but wonderful then wonderful then Anyway, I get on to amazon.com and I bought stuff for all of the kids And I had it all shipped to my mom's house and mom says can I do my shopping for the kids? I'll ask you right here. What do you want? And so she did hers too paid for it boom goes the dynamite my mother had all of these boxes showing up at her house For like days all the christmas shopping done in a day with a dial-up connection through AOL I will tell you it wasn't the most satisfying thing in the world.

It was satisfying to do well That part was but once we got all this stuff I got this like a little racetrack thing a little bit. I know that I know that you had to put it together and it had 19,435 parts to it to where as had I gone to the store You know it's a JC pennies in the toy department and I saw it and it just saw I wouldn't have bought it You know what I'm saying? I'm about something more simple, but still for the most part Pretty cool and I don't even have time to talk about stuff like advancements in health care Educational opportunities workplace efficiency entertainment entered. Oh, yeah, you're part of that right now.

I'm here entertaining you That's a environmental benefits global collaboration Ah That my friends is all going to be the subject of another podcast for the daily grateful and beautiful West central, florida in the Tampa Bay area where we are getting ravaged by a hurricane And I probably have no electricity. I am so grateful for technology And I'm grateful for you. Y'all pretty cool people. Love you a bunch.

See you next time
