EMERGENCY POD: John Donovan is sacked; what to do with Jimmy Lake?

from Dawgman Radio: A Washington Huskies athletics podcast · host 247Sports, Washington Huskies, Washington football, Washington Huskies athletics, Football, Baseball

It's been a nuts 24 hours for Washington Football, but at the end of it we know one thing, and one thing only - John Donovan has been relieved of his duties. The man hired by Washington Head Coach Jimmy Lake to create and run a pro-style offensive attack has been let go 13 games into his tenure, replaced by Junior Adams - who will take over Donovan's playcalling duties - and Payton McCollum, who will coach the quarterbacks. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - provide their immediate reactions to the Donovan news on this emergency podcast, and also start to dig into the larger questions...like has Lake earned enough time and trust within the department to get a second chance, especially when it comes to the hiring of a new offensive coordinator? And perhaps most importantly, is this news simply window dressing that hides the larger question from view? And that question is, what is Washington going to do with Jimmy Lake?Lake, already dealing with the embarrassment suffered via media gaffe early last week when he said Washington mainly recruits against "academically prowess schools", really stepped into some hot water when he got into an altercation with walk-on linebacker Ruperake Fuavai, who is part of UW's kick return team. Video showed Lake going after Fuavai, who had been tangled up with Oregon's Jaylon Redd at the end of a UW kick return in the first quarter. He was seen hitting Fuavai in the facemask and forehead of the helmet, and then repeatedly pushing Fuavai in the back after Fuavai turned away. It became enough of an event to cause Washington Athletic Director Jennifer Cohen to issue a statement about it, saying they were aware of it and were gathering more information. But what to do with Lake at this point? Suspension? Or do you simply wait until the end of the season and cut bait? The Dawgman guys discuss this for a bit to wrap up the emergency pod.
