Emfuleni municipality accused of turning a blind eye on Vaal River pollution

from AM Live on SAfm · host SABC News and Current Affairs

SAfm — The Department of Water and Sanitation says it has so far issued 11 notices to the Emfuleni instructing it to stop the pollution in the Vaal River but it has not been cooperating. Raw sewerage has been spilling into the river and is having a dire effect on many business owners who have built their lives and livelihoods there. Guesthouse owners, adventure tour companies and fishing expeditions who all rely on the river to attract tourists say people are hesitant to visit the area as they fear for their health and safety. The SABC's Jamaine Krige is following the story and Sakina Kamwendo spoke to the regional head of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Sbusiso Mthembu
