Emma Volume I Chapter IV

In which we observe the flourishing acquaintance between Emma and the amiable Harriet Smith, whose lack of sophistication is gently contrasted with the rustic plainness of Mr. Robert Martin, a young farmer of good repute but little polish. Emma, ever the vigilant matchmaker, begins to contemplate the advantages of Mr. Elton’s agreeable manners and social standing as a suitable prospect to redirect Harriet’s affections.
