Emotional Jesus – Week 1 | Compassion
from Thrive Community Church · host John Roth
Too often we treat people like transactions: useful when productive, discarded when not. Many of us were taught to "not be emotional," or we assume compassion is soft or mainly a feminine quality. That tension shows up when we scroll past headlines, speed through a grocery line, or decide who deserves help—and it leaves a lot of quiet suffering unseen. This message reintroduces compassion as a gut-level, active force—splanchnidzomai—the kind of compassion that feels in the entrails, comes alongside, and moves to heal, feed, touch, and send. Through concrete scenes (feeding crowds, touching the unclean, the rag man metaphor), the sermon reframes compassion as God’s default posture and as the work he calls us into: seeing people fully, feeling with them, and doing something. You’ll walk away with a clear picture of what compassionate action looks like and a fresh sense of who we’re being invited to become next.
