Empires of the Deep: The $130 Million Submerged Disaster
from Matter of Fact: A play on "matter" (physics) and "facts" (news). · host Larry White
Empires of the Deep was envisioned as a $130 million Hollywood-style fantasy epic funded and written by Chinese real estate tycoon Jiang Hongyu, who maintained absolute creative control despite having no prior filmmaking experience. The production was plagued by extreme behind-the-scenes chaos, including the cycling of multiple directors, hazardous working conditions that forced lead actress Irena Violette to flee the country without her passport, and nonsensical script demands intended to promote Jiang’s girlfriend. Ultimately, the film was never released and is widely suspected to have been a cross-border money laundering scheme, leaving it as a notorious "rot-bottom" project that has remained in post-production limbo for nearly eighteen years.
