I'm Peggy Macnite in today's episode I would like to talk about my observations of moving back to the United States as specifically around employment So just to kind of kick it off. I have been living in the United Kingdom for 30 years I cannot believe it 30 years three zero. That's a long time and but it doesn't feel like an awfully long time and However, we moved back to the United States and well, I'll say we moved back.

My husband is british And it'll be his first time actually living here. So I'm excited for him I was really excited for him and I say was because it was exciting to be coming home I've always referred to this as my home, but now I'm torn between both the UK and the US I feel an affinity for both places and what I would really ultimately love to see this is me dreaming now But I would really love to see the best of both countries put together And it would just be a phenomenal country if that was the case so we've moved back at November 2019 and I cannot believe how long it has taken my husband So the idea was my husband would get a job first because he's ultimately been the breadwinner We have a traditional household in that respect where he has been the main breadwinner And I've always had the supplemental income mainly because of My husband being an army veteran He has been in the army when he retired he had served for 30 years and has seen a few Hot spots in his time And we've moved around at one point. I think we had moved around in different houses every two years We were guaranteed to be moving different places. So that posed different challenges certainly for my job and careers however, for the most part up until 2013 Prior to everything before that us moving around Yes, I would have the fears and the worries and the stresses of will I get a job?

Where will I get a job and so on and so forth I managed to find employment no problem and when I say no problem It took me probably no more than three months maximum to find work and I was happy with that and again for another episode I can share all of the nuances of What employment for me as an army spouse looks like or I have certainly experienced but for now I will just focus on my husband coming here to the United States He's been actively looking for a job since November last year Here we are now in may nearly well We've gone beyond the middle of may here It is now the 21st of may and he still hasn't found work And I just do not get that. I am just absolutely Flabbergasted as to why an employer will not hire him there have been lots now He has been absolutely fantastic at being invited in for interview So his success rate of being invited in for interview has been really high Most of the times certainly in my past experience. I will send out a number of resumes they call him cvs in the United Kingdom And I'll be lucky if I get half of them come back and invite me in for interview But nevertheless I would always get a job So I thought the exact same thing would happen for my husband here But he has been to I don't know beyond two dozen two dozen interviews And not one of them has said hey, we really want you And I'm just like I'm speechless. I just don't understand why people are not hiring him He's fully qualified.

He has the degrees So it's not like he is some you know person who's just graduated from high school And can't do anything apart from the odd job here and there And I just I'm again I'm beyond words as to why he is not being offered a position a paid employed position here And quite frankly it really puts a dampener on things I'm really disappointed and so much so it moves me to tears because I'm disappointed in my country Quite frankly It feels that personal to me that why would they not want to hire this person He has so much experience and you know gifts to bring to the organization And they're not just saying yes And it's weird it is really weird I'm suspicious but what my suspicions lead down of my thoughts down the road of Wow, I never thought the United States being so inclusive is how they're perceived across the world Or so I think anyway That they would be so gosh darn xenophobic is how I can only come to the conclusion Because why else are they not hiring him? Okay, he's not a spring chicken. He's not a 20 something. He's not a 30 something But gee don't you think that somebody who is oh, I don't know early to middle 50s Would be a very good candidate for employment For starters, they're not going to be there for a 30 year career Gone are the days hello news flash people Gone are the days of when a 30 year career and you get the golden watch and the golden parachute at the end Are gone.

We've been told that for the last 10 certainly 20 years People have been saying you can forget that and you know you'll be moving around and off a lot with your jobs So if that's the case, why aren't they hiring him? I don't get it. He's got a good at least 10 to 12 years left of his career And I'm just astounded as to why they are not employing him I mean, I've coached him high and low as to what to say and how to say it when he goes into interview So it's not like he doesn't know what to say I mean shoot, he's been through enough of these now He should you know start to change and adapt and so on and so forth But even with the changing and adapting and tweaking your language and all that It's still not coming through So again, I can only be led to believe that they are xenophobic Which really amazes me because I was under the impression I'll be it wrongly that the United Kingdom was a very xenophobic nation And I would say that that was far from the truth Because if that was the case, I never would have found work And I always always found work Now it wasn't until 2013 when we came back from Canada after his last tour That I really struggled I took me eight months to find something Which has just been unheard of in my career lifetime And I couldn't understand why apart from there are now a number of people out there looking for work Because of the market crash in 2008 Is the only reason I could come up with It was just the weirdest thing ever And proof was presented to me when I took a job And I got pipped at the post with somebody else Because they were far more fully qualified than I was to do the job And in fact, they were overqualified But she just wanted something small And they were naturally happy to take her on Which, you know, good for her Well done, however, it just left me scratching my head thinking Well, what's happened with the career world? It seems like an awful lot of employers And I'm digressing ever so slightly But with certainly the UK A lot of employers, especially the young ones that were doing the hiring They were wanting people in a position where they already did the job They didn't want to train them, they were interested in training They just wanted them to get in, sit in their seat and do their job And that was that They didn't have to worry about that anymore Which, again, that's not an organization I like to work for I like to learn and grow And I think everyone should be in positions where they can learn and grow Because if you're hiring someone who's fully qualified to do the position Because they've already been doing it for a number of years Where's the growth in that?

Where's the excitement? Either the employer is not going to, you know, be very happy with them Possibly towards six months or a year down the road Because the employee is switched off Because they can't be bothered You're not showing an interest in them and they're training in development So why should they bother? Anyway, so back to this country He's still on the hunt to look for work Has a number of more yet more interviews lined up And we just play the waiting game and hope and pray That something, some person who actually has a brain Will see the worth that my husband can bring to the table And actually say, yes, we want you But until then, I'm just really disappointed in my country And also my countrymen because it just astounds me at how xenophobic they are I mean, the world is too large to be thinking like that Especially in this country I thought we were all inclusive With regards to, uh, is that not what the United States was built on? Of immigrants?

Hello?
