Empty Vessels
from The Truth Church
Pastor Hilton opens 2 Kings 4:1-7, where a widow facing debt and the loss of her sons is told by Elisha to gather empty vessels, shut the door, and pour out her single pot of oil until every vessel is full. He establishes that in Scripture, a 'vessel' is any object prepared for a purpose—a tool, implement, or utensil designed by its creator. Using Paul as a primary example, he explains that God prepared Paul from birth, training him under Gamaliel, not by chance but for his later mission as a chosen vessel to the Gentiles. The pastor emphasizes that every believer is a vessel God has shaped with a specific purpose, often beyond the walls of the church. He draws from Jeremiah 18 and Romans 9 to show that the Potter has authority over the clay, able to rework even a marred vessel. The key application is that vessels become unusable when filled with what they were never meant to hold—like a drinking cup stuffed with pencils. Before God can fill a vessel with His treasure for honorable use, it must be purged and made empty. Pastor Hilton warns from Matthew 12 that an empty, swept house invites back worse spirits if not filled with God. He illustrates with the tragedy of young believers who, after being cleansed and gifted by God, were drawn away by relationships. The sermon’s central call is for each person to let God purify their vessel so He can fill it with His purpose and use them to fill other empty vessels.
