“Encountering Jesus: Transformative Moments in the Gospel of Mark” Week 4: “Rejection in Nazareth” Reference: Mark 6:1-6 Big Idea: Despite Jesus’ miracles, Jesus was still rejected by those most familiar with Him. - People often doubt and reject what they can’t explain or understand. Cross-Reference: Matthew 13:57-58 Practice: Guard against familiarity breeding contempt, approach Jesus with fresh eyes and open hearts. Structure: Jesus Galilean Ministry [Mark 3:13-6:6] Comes to a close. · Jesus appoints disciples o Jesus introduces discipleship “Be with Jesus. Be Like Jesus. Do What Jesus Did.” o Jesus has taught parables, controlled nature, performed miracles, raised the dead… Jesus is now met by rejection, in His own backyard [Mark 6:1-6]. · This serves to setup the next section. o Jesus ushers in the “New Age” (Mark 6:7-8:30) o Jesus’ Ministry Beyond Galilee (Mark 6:7-8:26) “The Work” or “The Way” (John 14:6, Acts 9:2) § Sending out the “trained up” Disciples § *Disciples have authority to – evangelize, heal, cast out demons Transitions: Our text gives us 4 ways to obediently trust Jesus! 1. Follow Him (v1) And His’ disciples followed Him 2. Avoid Doubt (v2) Many who heard Him were astonished 3. Simple Obedience (v5) Except lay His hands on a few sick people and healed them 4. Remain Faithful (v6) And He was amazed at their lack of faith I. Follow Him (Mark 6:1) Discipleship begins with a decision to follow Jesus, even when it leads to places of doubt and rejection. Key Points: 1. Jesus returns to His hometown with His disciples, indicating that they are committed to following Him wherever He goes. 2. The disciples' decision to follow Jesus is a model for us, demonstrating the importance of staying close to Him even in challenging circumstances. II. Avoid Doubt (Mark 6:2) Avoiding doubt involves recognizing the authority and power of Jesus, even when it challenges our understanding. Key Points: 1. Jesus teaches in the synagogue, and many who hear Him are astonished by His wisdom and miracles. 2. Despite their astonishment, the people begin to question and doubt Jesus because they “know Him” as a common man from their hometown. (v2) They were amazed/astounded/astonished Ekplesso (ek-place’-so) to strike with PANIC or shock, to amaze, to astonish III. Simple Obedience (Mark 6:5) Simple obedience to Jesus' commands can lead to miraculous outcomes, even in environments of doubt. Key Points: 1. Jesus performs miracles by laying His hands on a few sick people and healing them, despite the overall lack of faith in the town. 2. The power of Jesus is not limited by the unbelief of others; He still brings healing and restoration through simple acts of obedience. IV. Remain Faithful (Mark 6:6) Remaining faithful means continuing to trust and follow Jesus even when confronted with widespread unbelief and rejection. Key Points: 1. Jesus is amazed at the lack of faith in His hometown, yet He continues His ministry undeterred. 2. Faithfulness involves persistence and resilience in the face of skepticism and doubt. (v6) He was amazed/marveled Thaumazo (thou-mad’-zo) to marvel, to wonder o Today we might say, “He was flabbergasted.” - Speechless, but not in a good way. Takeaway/Applicational Points: 1. Follow Him: Commit to following Jesus wherever He leads, maintaining a close relationship through prayer, scripture, and community. 2. Avoid Doubt: Recognize and resist doubt by recalling God's past faithfulness and engaging with the testimonies of others. 3. Simple Obedience: Trust in the power of simple acts of obedience to Jesus, believing that He can work miracles through our faithfulness. 4. Remain Faithful: Persevere in faith despite doubt and rejection, drawing strength from the example of Jesus and other faithful believers.
