from Eastview Baptist Church Teaching Podcast · host Eastview Baptist Church

Sermon Series Title: “Encountering Jesus: Transformative Moments in the Gospel of Mark” Week 6: “The Cost of Discipleship” Big Idea: John the Baptist’s martyrdom illustrates the challenges and sacrifices of discipleship. Practice: Count the cost of following Jesus and be willing to endure persecution and hardship for the sake of the Gospel. -       martus: a witness Usage: a witness; an eye- or ear-witness[1] -       in an ethical sense those are called μάρτυρεςἸησοῦ, who after his example have proved the strength and genuineness of their faith in Christ by undergoing a violent death (cf B. D.American edition and Dict. of Chris. Antiq.under the word ): Acts 22:20; Revelation 2:13; Revelation 17:6.[2] Reference: Mark 6:17-29          Cross-Reference: Luke 9:23 1. The Courage to Confront (Mark 6:17-20) Teaching Points: • Bold Confrontation: John the Baptist’s courage to confront Herod about his immoral relationship, risking his own safety. • Herod’s Ambivalence: Herod’s mixed feelings—fear and respect for John’s righteousness versus his own moral weakness. Application: • Speaking Truth to Power: Speak truth, even in difficult or dangerous situations. Look into the story of Jim Elliot[3], missionary to  Ecuador, and other examples of courageous truth-telling. • Righteous Integrity: Live with integrity so that their lives command respect, even from those who oppose them. 2. The Danger of Resentment (Mark 6:21-25) 2 Samuel V12[NIV] So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing.” 2 Samuel V14[NIV] David was dancing before the Lord with all his might 2 Samuel V15[NIV] while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.” Teaching Points: • Manipulation through Resentment: Herodias’s deep-seated grudge against John led her to manipulate her daughter to exact revenge. • Foolish Promises: Herod’s rash vow, driven by pride and the desire to impress his guests (he has both “the it crowd” as well as those under his leadership/example, setting the stage for tragedy. Application: • Guarding Against Bitterness: Examine how unresolved anger and bitterness can lead to destructive actions. Live out forgiveness and reconciliation, each day is an opportunity to release ourselves from the bondage of unforgiveness. • Wise Words: Measure the importance of measured and wise speech, avoiding rash promises that lead to regret. 3. The Cost of Righteousness (Mark 6:26-29) Teaching Points: • The Weight of Integrity: Herod’s sorrow indicates he knew the right thing to do but chose to save face over saving a righteous man. • The Ultimate Sacrifice: John’s martyrdom as the ultimate cost of standing for truth and righteousness. Application: • Courage in the Face of Injustice: Be steadfast in our convictions, even when it leads to personal loss or danger. • Honoring the Righteous: Encourage support for those who stand for truth and righteousness, recognizing the sacrifices they make. Conclusion • Recap: The story of John the Baptist highlights the importance of courage, the dangers of resentment, and the cost of righteousness. • Call to Action: Reflect on our own lives—are we standing for truth, guarding against bitterness, and ready to pay the price for righteousness? • Prayer: This week pray for boldness, integrity, and the strength to stand firm in truth.
