She is certainly “Better To…” to help young girls in her native Africa.American-African Youth Leadership Foundation (AAYLF) founded in 2010, is a nonprofit organization, 501©3 registered in PennsylvaniaMISSION: We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving vulnerable girls from poverty ending the risk of early child marriage. We believe that no girl should be robbed of her childhood, health, education, and her aspirations. AAYLF funds orphans and at-risk girls from the poorest sections of Zimbabwe so that they can attend school. Our program will cover all the costs including tuition, books, transportation, nutritious meals, and in some cases, we will provide housing so that the girls can escape child marriages and further their education. WHY DO WE DO WHAT WE DO? When a girl is married before the age of 18, she and her family are more likely to be poor, uneducated, and unhealthy. In Zimbabwe, more than 50% of girls that are married before age 18, face an end to their education, barriers to vocational and life skills, and increased risks of domestic violence and sexual diseases. Not only is child marriage illegal, but it is also a direct violation of human rights, one that can be corrected through education. LONG-TERM IMPACT: We hope to challenge the rigid cultural norms that promote gender discrimination and child marriages in Zimbabwe. Currently, we have sixty (60) girls in our program saved from child marriages. Our goal for 2021 is to save 100 girls from child marriages and keep them in school.
