And if someone decides one day to map out this itinerary, to retrace the places, to examine the traces… A face gazes at the horizon, looking upwards, as if searching for the sky and meaning beyond the visible. It does not follow the traces like a bloodhound: the traces are everywhere, scattered throughout the world – objects, thoughts, writings, laws, works of art – fragments of experience that remain after us. Each fragment becomes a clue, a small sign that can illuminate the path for those who come after us.
