England, Argentina through to World Cup semi-finals | ABC News Top Stories
from ABC News Top Stories · host ABC Australia
England and Argentina will face off in the semi finals of the FIFA World Cup, after they both won their matches in extra time today. Norway hit the back of the net in its match against England, with Andreas Schjelderup's (AHN-dre-ahs SHELL-druhp's) goal late in the first half. A Harry Kane goal for England was ruled out just before half time for a marginal offside. However, Jude Bellingham answered back in the second half to tie the game at 1-1 and send the match into extra time in Miami. The player of the match then went on to score a second in the 93rd minute. The game wasn't without controversy - with a Norway goal disallowed after star Erling Haarland was found to have brought down an England player and the Norwegian goal keeper also claiming the ball hit the wire of a spider cam ahead of an England goal. However, match officials found that the sensor in the ball showed no contact. England will now face Argentina, after they won 3-1 in extra time against Switzerland in Kansas City. A glancing header from Alexis MacAllister in the 10th minute gave Argentina an early advantage with the score 1-0 at half time. Then, Dan Ndoye's second-half strike for Switzerland cancelled out Mac Allister's header before the game changed in the shadows of the second-half hydration break, when Swiss striker Breel Embolo sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Argentina's Julian Avarez and Lautaro Martinez then sealed the game with goals in extra time. Argentina and England will fight for a place in the World Cup Final on Thursday morning local time.
