[English] DAVID "QADASI" JENKINS "As a young white boy in South Africa, I wanted to be a Zulu Warrior!"

David Jenkins was born in 1992 in the dying breath of the racist Apartheid system of South Africa. As a so called "born free", he grew up in a new South Africa, where all people are equal before the law. His upbringing was not marked by racial segregation anymore, he was allowed to wander between the so different worlds of South African cultures. Still, as a white male, he came from a privileged background and the norm would have been to stick with your white family and friends. David however had a curiosity in him and as a young white boy, he fell in love with the ancient Zulu culture, its customs, traditions, dances and first and foremost, its music! Thanks to his late father, who was a journalist, David got to experience the Zulu-Land, the old Zulu Kingdom, where traditions are practised to this day. He decided to learn the Zulu-language, he tried the Zulu-dances and he practiced the unique guitar and concertina play. In few words: he became a "Zulu warrior" and started to live the dream as a professional Maskandi (traditional Zulu music) artist. From the TV show "South Africa´s Got Talent" and little concerts, he started to build his career. But it really kicked of when he met Maskandi artist Maqhinga, a musical veteran, almost twice his age. Maqhiga became his teacher and let the young David, who soon became David "Qadasi" (old word for white boy), to greater heights. 15 years later they tour South Africa and the world as Maskandi-Duo "Qadasi & Maqhinga", released several Albums and numerous songs. We talk about this fascinating story, how David sees Germans and South Africans and of course, we touch on the present challenges of modern South Africa, more than 30 years after Apartheid ended.
