Ep. 10 - James “The Hairless Ape” Broderick: Ancestral Health & Re-Wilding
from The Rebel Health Coach · host Thom Underwood & NOVA Media
James “The Hairless Ape” Broderick is the creator and host of The Ancestral Health Radio podcast. He rehabilitates domesticated humans so that they may safely, and consciously, re-enter the wild. Ancestral health is, basically, looking at the different elements and perspectives of your health through the lens of a 21st century hunter-gatherer-gardener. How do we, as a species, fit into the web of life? James started down this path after an unlikely event: the police raided his home and busted him for selling marijuana. The disruption to his life helped him make a much-needed change, and he started pursuing natural health. “Re-wilding,” which can also be thought of as un-domestication, incorporates ancestral health and lifestyle practices to live a more sustainable life and get in touch with your roots. It’s a lifelong learning process, and James approaches it one step at a time. He has been focusing on health and nutrition, and he’s competent in this area now. He will be focusing on getting closer to his food ecology by hunting, gathering, and fishing more often. James will also start incorporating more natural movements (like squatting, hanging, walking), which is fairly easy to do if you just go outside. James is working towards his ideal diet, and he supports people experimenting to find what works best for them (because what works best for him may not work best for you). This is the process that works for James… Intermittent fasting (only eats from 12-8) Drinks fatty coffee in the morning Breaks fast with something fermented, followed by a homemade bone broth He has two main meals and one snack: a giant colorful salad; 1-2 cups of both cruciferous vegetables & dark leafy greens; and a handful of macadamia nuts He thinks of his meals like an egg: mostly fat, moderate amount of protein, and fairly low in carbohydrates Remember that our ancestors didn’t always have access to protein, so he eats meat sparingly (and he mostly eats seafood) We’re overstimulated in today’s society, and it can seem hard to make the time for self-care… But you don’t have to change your whole life all at once. Start building healthier lifestyle and diet habits one practice at a time, until you don’t even have to think about it.
