Ep. 10 – Patty Giannattasio; Bankruptcy, Foreclosure, & Tomato Soup

from Sucker Punched

Meet Patty, an all around awesome and brave person (also known as my mom), shares the story of the years when my dad was laid off: he was running his own business and, while it was a thriving business, their mortgage was sold to a bank who wouldn't recognize the federal program that allowed them to pay only interest while they got back on their feet. Bankruptcy and foreclosure followed and my parents had to find a place to live when most places wouldn't consider them as tenants with a history of bankruptcy. Grace showed up in the form of Toys 'R' Us Geoffrey Bucks and tomato soup and helped her to realize that "home" is where family is. Patty's Answers to the Fun Questions: • What are you loving right now? Daffodils, the completed Niantic boardwalk, and spring arriving • What's your favorite meal right now? Noosa coconut yogurt and dark chocolate. • What are you doing to take care of yourself? Learning about who she is and what it looks like to be a widow in this season of life. • What are you doing to be brave? Pursuing new interests and trusting God with an unknown future. The disease sneaks up on you and your loved one, and it feels like you’ve been sucker-punched in the gut when you get the diagnosis from a doctor. So many things race through your mind: why us? What do we do? We worked so hard to get to this point in life. We just moved here after we both worked for 30 years, sold our house up North, and retired to Florida to enjoy our “golden years”. It’s not fair! Who’s going to take care of her/him? I don’t know a thing about this illness. She’s always done the cooking; I don’t even know how to boil water. He's always taken care of me and everything else, like Finances. I don’t even drive! And it goes on and on. Facing this disease will bring you to your knees. Once you get over the initial shock (GUT PUNCHED), the questions and fears take hold. Where do we turn for help? Who do I call? What do I do? How do you take care of someone with Alzheimer's? Are there support gr Unfinished People Brandon Zieske & Chad Ellenburg Welcome to the Unfinished People podcast. I'm Chad Ellenburg and my co-host is Brandon Zieske. We are both pastors who love and follow Jesus. And we are both very aware of how unfinished we are. Each week, we will talk about the struggle and the beauty of living and breathing in these unfinished vessels. The apostle Paul describes this as carrying around the Treasure of Jesus in mere "jars of clay." Don't we know it.At the coronation of Jesus on the cross, when he punched death in the mouth, he said "it is finished." So why doesn't it feel like it? If you connect with that sentiment, come have a listen. Thanks.
