Ep 10 Stuart Snyder On School With Steve Jobs, Selling The Startup Vision, Aussie Ideas Boom

from Rooster Radio - Stories & Insights from Entrepreneurs and Leaders in Business, Health, Tech & More · host Apiro Media

"Unemployed lazy bum." That's the title on Stuart Snyder's business card. The truth is, it's a job he worked incredibly hard for. Now a tech startup investor and mentor, Stuart Snyder found success as co-founder of Your Amigo, a global internet marketing powerhouse which started in Adelaide. Stuart's story started in Silicon Valley, where he went to high school with "long haired hippy" Steve Jobs. He left a dysfunctional home life to forge his own path as an accountant. Finding love in Adelaide, Stuart also found the team and technology that would become Your Amigo. The early years were treacherous, and Stuart talks about being able to sell the Your Amigo product anywhere in the world but "conservative" Australia. Even when Your Amigo was at it's most successful, life for Stuart was uncertain. After a trip overseas he returned home to face a divorce and, despite being well off after exiting the company, was left feeling "like a prisoner in solitary confinement". Now a wealth of life and business experience, Stuart focused on giving back - investing in Australian technology startups, mentoring promising founders and becoming an influential voice in South Australia's startup scene in particular. It's an exciting time for startups in Australia, with the government recently announcing a billion dollar package to spark innovation and commercialise research. Stuart says it is a step in the right direction but for the "ideas boom" to kick off, Australian culture needs to change. Technology is seen as the driver for economies and growth in the years ahead, but as valuations hit the multi-billions for a growing number of "unicorn" startups, is the bubble about to burst? Having seen a number of booms and busts in his time, Stuart shares his insights, and talks about what investors are looking for in startups and their teams.
