King Pandu receives a curse that prevents him from experiencing the pleasures of the bed, leading him to retire to the forest with his two wives, Kunti and Madri. Kunti reveals a divine mantra that allows her to invoke gods to have children. They have five sons: the Pandavas. However, Pandu eventually succumbs to the curse, and Madri joins him in death, leaving Kunti and the Pandavas orphaned. They are taken to Hastinapura, and the kingdom mourns the loss of Pandu. Vyasa advises Satyavati and her daughters-in-law to live a peaceful life in the forest to avoid future sorrows.
