Ep. 107 - When Empathy Becomes Self-Abandonment

from Redefining Wisdom · host Daniel Cianci

Sometimes the reason you can’t let someone go isn’t that you don’t see the truth. It’s because you understand them too well. You see their fears, their wounds, their insecurities, their limitations. You understand why they pull away, why they become distant, why they struggle to meet you where you are.And eventually, your empathy for them can become self-abandonment.In this episode, I talk about one of the hardest lessons I’m still learning: understanding someone does not obligate you to keep absorbing the consequences of their behavior.I dive into why letting go can feel so painful even when you know a relationship, friendship, or connection is no longer nourishing you, and why something can be completely real without being sustainable.I also talk about:- The difference between empathy and self-abandonment- Why we suppress reasonable needs to protect a connection- Why fear of losing someone can make us lose ourselves- How real connections can still be unsustainable- Why letting go often means grieving the future we imagined- Why boundaries are information, not punishment- How self-trust makes letting go possible- Why choosing yourself does not mean you stop caringLetting go doesn’t require you to erase the memories. It doesn’t require you to stop loving someone. It doesn’t require you to pretend the connection didn’t matter.Sometimes letting go simply means accepting that you can love something, grieve something, miss something, and still choose not to lose yourself trying to keep it.And maybe that’s the hardest part:You don’t need to know what happens next to know that you cannot keep abandoning yourself here.Let's Connect.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/danielmcianci/Twitter:  https://twitter.com/DanielMCianciYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@redefiningwisdomEmail: https://www.redefiningwisdom.com/contact-2/Website: https://www.redefiningwisdom.com/
