Ep. 11 - Fish Fraud and Illegal Fishing

from The Conservation Conversation - Season 1 · host Erik E. Crown

The Conservation Conversation Ep. 11 - FISH FRAUD AND ILLEGAL FISHING Fishing is one of the biggest businesses worldwide, considered the most traded commodity, it's a multi-trillion dollar business with almost zero legislation or enforcement. 120 billion fish are killed on commercial farms each year, with another 2.7 trillion caught and killed in the wild. Today, more than 90 percent of the seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported, and less than 1 percent is inspected by the government specifically for fraud. Snapper (87%) and tuna (59%) were the most commonly mislabeled fish types. Today I share my experiences in the Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, and discuss how fish fraud and fish market is leading to extinction, slavery, and disease. And I also share how my cancer became a sharpening stone for my life.
