Ep. 113: Salt of the Earth (1954) Part I-The Film or ‘Strike 2’

Zach welcomes back filmmaker and podcast pal Marshall Rosales to the program for an epic Two- Part discussion surrounding the motion picture and the production story of Herbert J. Biberman's 1954 epic that would be suppressed amid the Hollywood Blacklist, SALT OF THE EARTH. In Part 1, Zach and Marshall are joined by Hispanic Heritage educator and Improv theater teacher Adrian Holguin, whose family history ties directly into the film's production and the Miners strike that inspired the film. Join the trio as they learn more about the Empire Zinc strike that inspire the film and how the miners and their families had input in the film script, marvel at the plot and drastically it contrasts and strays from tropes and patterns that were typical of the Golden Age of Hollywood, become impressed by the many ways the film overcomes its obstacles with non-professional actors to weave a tale of honesty, and then settle upon the many ways in which the film has become more important as time has gone on and how it relates to efforts in the world of today.
