It's 1945 and the Nazi's have invaded her small island home, there's nowhere to escape to. Her husband Charles if off at war and her two children Anne and Nicholas are unable to leave the house due to a severe allergy to light. Days are spent sewing, teaching the children bible lessons and breaking up sibling rivalries. Having sent an advertisement to the paper Grace is elated when three servants arrive at the house to assist.
