In Alice Hoffman’s story, this version of Leech Lake resides in Massachusetts. It’s said to be home to a serpent-like water creature that Faith Owens befriends—a being cloaked in shadow and folklore. The Owens women often swim in its waters, though they’re never able to dive beneath the surface, only float.
