Ep 118 - They Hadn't All Been Shot

from Hooks & Runs

When William Howard Taft, our 27th president, began a tradition by throwing out the first pitch at the Washington Senators' opening day game in 1910, three presidents had been assassinated in the prior 45 years - the equivalent today of having three presidents assassinated while in office since 1977. Yet, Taft went to that ballgame on a whim that afternoon and sat right on the front row, by the Senators' dugout. It was a different time. Today we discuss ceremonial first pitches, presidential and otherwise.
