Ep 12 | Embracing the Depths of Your Inner World | Highly Sensitive Series

from Rise & Realign: Conversations for the Sensitive Soul

This episode marks the beginning of a special series dedicated to understanding the high sensitivity trait. I speak to the contrast in the world and the importance of tending to our own nervous systems, especially when we are exposed to news and topics designed to induce fear. I share my own journey from being an "overprotective mom" driven by fear to understanding that my high-strung nature was a result of ignoring my body's communication. I also share my own story of school anxiety and gut issues, and how I wish I had known about the vagus nerve and the power of slowing down back then. If you have ever felt that you were "too much" or "too sensitive," if you are struggling with chronic anxiety or gut issues, if you feel overwhelmed by the news or the world, if you are ready to start your day in a way that nurtures you instead of depletes you, this conversation is for you. What Arose in This Conversation Sensitivity Is a Depth of Processing: Taking in more stimuli and processing it more deeply is not a flaw. It is a sensory intelligence. It means we notice subtleties in our environment and our inner world sooner than others. This depth of processing naturally leads to a depth of caring. The Overprotective Mom: I share how I started as an overprotective mom, driven by fear, trying to make sure my children were safe. I didn't understand how my nervous system was communicating until I learned to listen. Fear was a strong driving force for a large portion of my life. The Power of Nature: A positive environment has a huge impact on our felt experience. Nature is healing and peaceful. Wide-open spaces, hiking in a forest, or relaxing at a beach help the nervous system feel safety and calmness. This is not a luxury; it is a necessity for the sensitive soul. How You Start Your Day: How you start your day is how the rest of the day unfolds. If we do not choose what to give our attention to in the morning, yesterday's information glides right back in, keeping us in the same patterns. We must choose ourselves from the moment we wake up. The Breath as a Signal of Safety: Nasal breathing oxygenates and hydrates the body. Exhaling slowly out of the mouth signals to the nervous system that it is okay to relax and that we are safe. Many of us hold our breath or brace without knowing it. School Anxiety and Gut Issues: I share my own experience of almost not graduating high school because of gut issues and anxiety. Back then, doctors gave medication and ordered tests, but no one told me about the vagus nerve or the importance of nasal breathing. We know a lot more these days about what naturally nourishes us. From Reactive to Creative: When we stay on high alert and avoid painful experiences, we remain reactive. But when we slow down and feel safe, we access the enormous creativity within us. Being a highly sensitive person is not just about challenges; it is about infinite possibilities. It Is Never Too Late: It is never too late to learn this information. It is never too late to start choosing ourselves. We do not need to abandon ourselves or exclude ourselves to be kind and caring. An Invitation to Carry With You As you listen, or
